K-9 Bodyguards Review

Mike Harlow includes some beautiful glossy illustrations in his book on protection dog training, however you would be hard pressed to use it as a guidebook to training protection dogs, and you might actually get yourself into some serious trouble if you tried. In actuality he seems less interested in the specifics of the actual steps involved in the training, but more inclined to rescue the reputation of American Pitbull Terriers at every possible opprtunity. I enjoyed the book, but it certainly shouldn't be used to base a training program on.

Advanced Schutzhund (Howell reference books) Review

Advanced Schutzhund (Howell reference books)

Too often in the dog sports we find ourselves looking for answers to training problems. There are many good books that give an overview of schutzhund, but not many that get down to the meat of things. I received my copy of this book just a few days before a trial and found myself thumbing through the book to find a solution to a pre-trial problem with my dogs Guard and Bark. Ivan and Karen's well thought out book, not only pointed out where my problem came from, but offered a solution. Not many fixes work that easy, but I walked away with a Sch II on my Malinois after the trial was over. Advanced Schutzhund will be in the equipment bag along with the sleeves and the dumbells from now on.

K9 Schutzhund Training: A Manual for Tracking, Obedience and Protection Review

K9 Schutzhund Training: A Manual for Tracking, Obedience and Protection

This book is a major disappointement. I borrowed it from my library prior to deciding whether to purchase it and I'm glad I did. People familiar with Schutzhund training will get nothing from this book. For people new to the sport it will provide a decent description of the exercises within each phase and the necessary equipment, but little else.
It provides almost nothing in the way of sound training advice and problem solving. The methods employed by the authors are so antiquated in some instances as to be almost laughable, e.g. introducing a dog to heeling by the leash & jerk method. The training for protection work is particularly inadequate and might very well be dangerous to a neophyte wishing to employ these methods. As if that weren't enough, the authors repeatedly interchange the masculine and feminine pronouns within paragraphs throughout the book, making things sometimes confusing but more often just plain irritating.
For first timers the only book to read, and an excellent one at that, is Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods by Susan Barwig and Stewart Hilliard. Those who already own that book would do well to add Advanced Schutzhund by Ivan Balabanov and Top Working Dogs by Dietmar Schellenberg to their collections. All three books are available at Amazon, all three are cheaper than K9 Schutzhund Training, and all three are worthy of the paper they are printed on.

Professional Schutzhund trainers and instructors Resi Gerritsen and Ruud Haak bring their years of knowledge and experience together in this book, K9 Schutzhund Training. Appropriate for training dogs for both protection work and for international sport dog certification and competition, this is designed to be an especially practical training method.Founded on the idea that effective training can only happen when a good bond and good communication exist between handler and dog, this method allows individual handler-dog teams to progress at their own speed. Different breeds, and individual dogs, may require different lengths of time and repetition to effectively learn to perform the exercises contained in this book. While many trainers claim a dog can be trained to perform to this level in only a few weeks, the authors show that effective, long-lasting results can only be achieved with time and patience, and especially, that training methods which force the dog to perform under stress or duress are doomed to produce dogs which lack confidence and perform inconsistently. The three sections of this book focus on tracking, obedience and protection and contain numerous black and white pictures.

The Koehler Method of Guard Dog Training; An Effective & Authoritative Guide for Selecting, Training & Maintaining Dogs in Home Protection, Plant Security, Police, & Military Work Review

neither are big dogs. It's important to remember that this particular book is aimed at training large aggressive breeds. Yes, you can get your poodle to sit and stay and fetch using other methods. But this is a method for making sure your hundred pound Rottweiler obeys you when failure can mean tragedy. I've trained every one of my dogs using this book's methods. I've had German Sheperds, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Filas. Every one of them has responded perfectly to the training. I'm not a breeder or a professional trainer, but my dogs' obedience has been equal to or better than any of the trained dogs that I've encountered. Some of the methods aren't pleasant; training soldiers for combat isn't usually a pleasant process, either. But the point of effective training isn't the trainer's assuaging his or her Inner Child; it's about developing RELIABLE control over a potentially lethal animal. The huggy-wuggy here's-a-puppy treat methods don't work when the animal is under strong external stimulation. Not a week goes by that I don't see the failure of the "kindhearted" methods, just in the course of walking my dog in the local parks.
The main thing with the Koehler method is to follow it exactly!
Some of the detractors here have deliberately lied about the contents of the book. For example, he doesn't advocate beating a dog"for 30 minutes". He advocates hitting the dog sharply on the muzzle if it turns on the trainer. Anyone who thinks that you can correct that kind of misplaced aggression with hugs, treats and "bad-doggies" should reconsider owning a large breed.
It's important to note that Koehler devotes a good bit of time early in the book on selecting dogs with suitable temperament.
In short, I recommend this book without reservation to those with ANY breed of dog who are willing to trade a bit of unpleasantness for a well adjusted dog with rock solid obedience.
