(More customer reviews)Dr. Roy Schroeder was a marine boxing champion, and chose college over a professional boxing career. As a PH.d in Kinesiology, he wrote many books on diverse subjects, but boxing remained his passion - along with teaching. One of his Graduate students at the time was also Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, and they co-authored a book together on karate skills.
I was one of the original students to work with Dr. Schroeder when he was writing this boxing book at Memphis State University. I quickly became a "follower" of his methods and was particularly amazed at his ability on the speed bag, hitting from the front, back and sides of the bag, with fists and elbows. He was truly a master of the Speed Bag!
This book was used as the guide for the Memphis State Boxing classes during the early 1970's. It has Seven Chapters: (1) Benefits of boxing (2) Rope Jumping (3) Hitting the striking bag (speed bag) (4) Punching the training Bag (5)Using the Medicine Ball (One and two person workouts..) (6) Organization of a training program and (7) Safety Rules for a boxing program.
Each chapter is generously illustrated with many pictures, Mostly drawn by him personally (as he was a gifted artist) as well as sequenced photographs from high speed movie stills. He was incredible with a jope rope and that chapter also has many advanced rope manuevers illustrated.
This book was written as a teaching guide for anyone wanting to learn boxing skills, AND for those wanting to organize a safe boxing program. Having read many "boxing skills" books since this book was written, I would still stand by the information as being superior to most available today. It is a shame this book is now "out of print" and was not digitized later. As one of the "original Schroeders Raiders" (students in the very first boxing class at MSU), I still hold my copy, even after 30 years.
(Much of the speed bag information within this book gave birth to "The Speed Bag Bible", for he taught me the basic skills.)
I wholeheartly recommend This Book if you can find it.
