(More customer reviews)The 'Opposing Viewpoints Series' from Greenhaven Press is a series of more than ninety volumes that takes social, cultural, and politically controversial issues and provides an honest presentation all sides of current issues for the benefit of young readers. The latest addition to this outstanding series is "Sports and Athletes" in which author Christine Watkins who (in complete compliance with the Greenhaven Press 'Opposing Viewpoints' format presents a 'pro/con' format for the text) addresses the specific issues arising from place, prominence, values, and influence of athletics and athletes in American society. Drawing from a variety of contributors and sources, "Sports and Athletes" addresses the benefits and liabilities of sports for children; athletes as role models, women and athletics, sports and academia, and governmental restrictions with respect to sports. Of special note is the chapter devoted to drug use in sports. Enhanced with the inclusion of a periodical and book bibliographies, a listing of topics for further discussion, and a roster of relevant organizations, "Sports and Athletes" is a highly recommended addition to both school and community library reference collections and supplemental Social Issues supplemental reading list.
