I liked this book very much. I got the book for a college class that I was taking and I found myself reading more than what was assigned to me by the teacher. The chapters flow together and you can even skip around if you want too. I refer to the book quite often. I am a biological science major and it tackles all the issues such as nuture vs. nature and even has a whole chapter devoted to the biology of Psychology. The book has many colorful pictures and test such as visual test. I recomend this book for anyone entering the helping profession.

This is a great book that is compliment to Mezirow's work on transformative learning. I purchased this book as part of my Doctoral studies and have found it foundational to my understanding of self directed learning and the process utilized in my post graduate context. It is not an easy read if you have no background in this or a related field, but it provides a wonderful foundation for an educator interested in directing his or her own continued learning.

Teaching Atlas of Chest Imaging Review

Teaching Atlas of Chest Imaging

Organized well with images, appropriate histories and annotated images, this book is an excellent resource for review and for oral boards.
My only dissatisfaction with the title is that the Diagnosis is listed as the title of the chapter (which is hard to overlook when you're actually trying to take a case as an unknown).

Leadership Lessons of the U.S. Navy SEALS : Battle-Tested Strategies for Creating Successful Organizations and Inspiring Extraordinary Results Review

Leadership Lessons of the U.S. Navy SEALS : Battle-Tested Strategies for Creating Successful Organizations and Inspiring Extraordinary Results
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I chose to buy and read this book because one of its authors was a Navy SEAL, and it promised to highlight military leadership lessons from a SEAL perspective. I soon discovered an outstandingly balanced and informative organizational leadership book that took an honest military leadership perspective and effectively applied it directly and indirectly to civilian business environments. This real-world leadership book should appeal to any military-related person and anyone interested in better understanding the military and business leadership connection.
This book was written by a brother duo, one a successful corporate executive and the other an experienced SEAL officer. In their introduction, they accurately assessed what made the book stand apart from other leadership books I have read: "Be forewarned: This book does not pay homage to godlike CEOs, legendary generals, and other corporate cult figures. It is our view that masterful leadership and effective teams, not colorful mavericks, produce success...Every great leader has a great team above, around, and behind him or her...[The book is] a collection of lessons from SEAL training and SEAL operations that have been tested in the business world."
The book is broken down into six chapters (Setting Goals, Organization-Create Structure or Fight Alone, Leadership-The Hardest Easy Thing, The Thundering Herd, Building a Thundering Herd, and Now Maintain Your Momentum), with embedded lessons related to each chapter title. Each lesson starts with a SEAL mission (a SEAL team sea-story or experience) and ends with a suggested business take-away. The lessons stimulated thought and offered ideas for improving individual and organizational leadership. The authors left it to the readers to decide which lessons applied to their situations and then challenged them to apply those lessons.
The authors' candid perspectives and observations were refreshing and were reflected in their equally straightforward lessons. A sampling of the authors' colorful lessons includes:
*Avoid creating a capability and then looking for a mission to justify it
*Build boundaries to prevent infighting and cannibalism
*If you think no one else can replace you, you're an egotistical S.O.B. who's failed
*There are probably good reasons why your marching orders seem screwed up
*Identify your lead dogs, feed them well, and build a pack around them
*If you need to scream, you need to practice
The team-building and teamwork concepts emphasized in this book apply to military and business leaders and organizations. If you want time-tested ideas to improve your leadership, or your organization's effectiveness, then you should read this book.

Let the teacher who works with Tiger Woods, the world's best player, help you cure the yips—the frustrating problem that can cause even the greatest players to miss short putts, jab chip shots over the green, or miss fairways by eighty yards off the tee."The yips can make you feel like you want to quit golf and take up fishing full time. I know. I've been there. But Hank's experience and sensitivity to the problem make him unique in the world of golf instructors. If you have the yips, you couldn't be in any better hands than Hank Haney's."—Mark O'Meara, from the Foreword to Fix the Yips ForeverMost golfers think of the "yips" as a psychological affliction, a confidence problem that causes them to lose control of their game because of a split-second glitch. But scientists are now starting to unlock the true root of the problem: focal dystonia, a motor-neural malfunction that causes a player's brain to distort the message being sent to the muscles. Acclaimed golf instructor Hank Haney used these discoveries to overcome his twenty-year battle with the yips, and now he shares his breakthrough regimen that can "rewire" any golfer who struggles with the yips.Showcasing dozens of practical, hands-on techniques for eliminating the yips from putting, chipping, and the full swing, Fix the Yips Forever delivers the brand of prescriptive advice and drills that have made Haney one of the most sought after golf instructors in the world. This groundbreaking handbook features more than 100 black-and-white photographs, including reproductions of diagnostic screens and Haney's ultrasound "yips measurement System" for hands-on yip-free training. Lisa Abend is a fantastic writer who did an amazing job in capturing the aspirations and training of the stagiaires behind elBulli. Starting the book with elaborations of kitchen lingo like "quemo" and "oído", the author immediately hooks the reader into behind-the-scene in chef Ferran Adrià's kitchen. She described how each stagiaire came to become a stagiaire at elBulli with a journalistic understanding of their background and she went on to make each character alive in the reader's eyes. And Baby Makes Four: A Trimester-by-Trimester Guide to a Baby-Friendly Dog

We have two large dogs that live in the house and we're expecting our first child in a few months. I was a little concerned about how to help our dogs adjust to the new arrival. I bought this book with high hopes. It is not bad, but the suggestions are very basic and I didn't agree with all of the suggestions. The author says you should not let your dogs sleep in the bedroom with you and, if they are accustomed to sleeping there now, you should move them out before the baby arrives. It seems like this would just further upset a dog who has been used to sleeping nearby all its life. Our dogs sleep in their crates in our room at night and I see no need to change that arrangement once the baby arrives. The book also includes a large section on basic obedience commands. This is useful if you have never done obedience training, but we've taken our dogs through advanced obedience training and this part was completely unnecessary. I really wanted more tips on how to handle the inevitable baby-dog dilemmas (dogs taking baby's food, dogs licking baby's face, etc.) but I didn't really find the tips I was looking for.

On the heels of his highly-acclaimed novel Jenny Willow, Mike Gaddis reaches again into a half-century love affair with pointing dogs and upland birds to retrieve the true-life story of Zip Zap, his greatest English setter. Gaddis swore to be painfully selective in choosing the puppy that would accompany him as he pursued his dream of competing in horseback field trials. He knew the smallest female of the litter was special, but he didn't fully realize her potential until he let her loose in the field. Her lightning speed earned her the name Zip Zap, and she grew to be the most brilliant bird dog Gaddis ever owned. In this absorbing memoir, Gaddis celebrates the dog's indomitable spirit and tells the story of training and developing a superior pointer, from her first unrefined runs in the amateur puppy stakes to victorious performances in major championships. Evocatively told and set against the plantation quail hunting and field trialing legacy of the Old South, here is a rich, powerful memoir, certain to gain favor with anyone who has shared the destiny of a once-in-a-lifetime dog.

As religious rituals, rites of passage, and celebrations of the body, athletics were deeply woven into the fabric of ancient Greek life. Modelled after physical exercises and competitions that existed in earlier Near Eastern cultures, hundreds of athletic contests were held throughout the ancient Greek world. In the eighth century, B.C. the games held at Olympia began to surpass all others in their fame and splendour and would give rise to a world history of sport that continues to this day. Published to coincide with the return of the Olympics to Greece in 2004, this thoroughly researched book studies sport in ancient Greece over a span of a millennium and a half - from the earliest mentions of athletics in Homer's Iliad and other literary sources, through the Classical age, and into the Hellenistic, Roman, and late antique periods. With more than five hundred illustrations, the book tours the monumental stadiums, bathhouses, temples, and other structures built to host the athletic events and to house the wealth of art created to pay tribute to the athletes, gods, and heroes of the games.

Count 'em up, and you probably remember 15 or maybe 20 great Olympic moments. Bud Greenspan does readers, atheletes, and the Olympic Games by providing a moment-by-moment history of the games. There's Olga and Mark Spitz, but there's also moments from pre-televised Olympiads, and snapshots of people like Agnes Keleti, who missed the 1940 Olympics (cancelled due to war), was expelled from the Hungarian gymnastics club because she was Jewish, made the Hungarian team for the 1948 Olympics but spent it on crutches due to a torn ligament, and finally won gymnastics gold, silver and bronze in 1952 at Helsinki. There's the Japanese track teammates who, winning silver and bronze respectively, had their medals cut in half and resoldered to share the silver and bronze. There's the yachter who dropped out of second place to rescue a capsized competitor...this is a book of heroism, spirit and fascinating history. Sure, some great moments could be added...Torville & Dean's comeback, Kerry Stug's landing on a fractured foot, and where is Janet Linn? But reading about Joan Benoit breaking the women's marathon gender barrrier, and Wilma Rudolph breaking the color barrier...this is a great book for adults and kids.

I have been to Rickwood Field twice. Once to see what a restored park was like and the other for the 2010 Rickwood Classic. It is an amazing place that has the ability to let your mind wonder in ways only old baseball parks can. Allen Barra does a great job of bringing to life the history of Rickwood Field. From Rick Woodward, to the legendary Black Barons, to Charlie Finley's A's. As an enthusiast for Engel Stadium in Chattanooga and being apart of the Engel Foundation, I was particulary interested in what moved citizens of Birmingham to bring Rickwood back to life as a community asset. The key, to never let the memories die... This book goes a long way in making that happen.

Best Practices in School Neuropsychology: Guidelines for Effective Practice, Assessment, and Evidence-Based Intervention (Wiley Desktop Editions) Review

Best Practices in School Neuropsychology: Guidelines for Effective Practice, Assessment, and Evidence-Based Intervention (Wiley Desktop Editions)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Best Practices in School Neuropsychology is a well-written guidebook for school psychologists who believe that an important goal of education is to provide experiences that result in maximum possible learning for individual students and who wish to pursue a brain-based and cognitive route to practice. This book is of particular importance when considering the education of learners with diverse neurobiological systems who arrive at school with great variations in their readiness to succeed academically. The field of school neuropsychology offers guidance to school psychologists for both assessing these individuals and assisting teachers to remediate student challenges and teach to learners' strengths.
Importantly, in the foreword by Elaine Fletcher-Janzen, the reader is reminded of the importance of neuroscientific findings in the area of reading. Specifically, that the brain has a greater degree of plasticity than once thought and that through educational interventions we can achieve long-term positive reading outcomes. Later, Fletcher-Janzen continues `Executive functions, for example, are critical to reading comprehension.' Today when psychologists examine executive functions we can also see how the child's attention and memory work. Exploring these and other cognitive functions can assist school psychologists to guide other educators in order to differentiate instruction.
The editor implies that as the 1990s, the so called `Decade of the Brain,' fade into the past and each decade brings more excitement and information about human potential, it seems that school psychologists interested in the brain and cognitive connections have a meaningful part to play both in research and practice. School neuropsychologists can bring important knowledge about cognitive processes to the discussion of brain function and student achievement to inform research as well as practice in schools.
This book is organized broadly around three topics: 1) Professional issues in school neuropsychology, 2) Practice issues in school neuropsychology, and 3) Clinical applications in school neuropsychology. Editor, Daniel Miller, has provided a book that contains current and key information for school psychologists who may be interested in obtaining further education in the field, or those who may want to read to enhance their understanding of the brain and cognition, for example in areas such as RTI (Response to Intervention) and assessment of children with various learning challenges including academic disabilities, processing deficits, and medical disorders. Lastly, it should be mentioned that also included is `the rationale for the importance of school psychologists' collaboration with parents, educators and other professionals' in the community and `unique challenges in working with culturally diverse populations.'
Donna Wilson, Ph.D.

Very little information about the impact of reflection on teacher performance, teacher retention, and student learning is available in teacher preparation programs. This book provides practical and research-based chapters that offer greater clarity about the particular kinds of reflection that matter and avoids talking about teacher reflection generically, which implies that all kinds of reflection are of equal value. This book addresses five very pertinent concepts: (1) teacher reflectivity in theory and research, (2) teacher reflectivity in teacher education programs, (3) teacher reflectivity with teacher candidates, (4) teacher reflectivity in schools and classrooms, and (5) teacher reflectivity and international perspectives.

We ordered this book after agreeing to rescue an "older" Yorkie that had been removed from a puppy-mill. We then went to our local library, reviewed most of the books on Yorkies and chose this book as the best all-around Yorkie-specific text for our needs, including common sense advice for all breeds. The book covers all the relevant topics in raising and caring for this fine noble breed, and then some. We have raised dogs for decades, and know that many breeds are unique in their needs for grooming and health care. The included DVD is a great addition for children who may not be willing to read the book but can learn from observing the training and educational segments on the DVD.
The book arrived in new condition, as advertised, was wonderfully well packaged and arrived within days of ordering. Couldn't be happier!

The Body Shop: Parties, Pills, and Pumping Iron -- Or, My Life in the Age of Muscle

This book was not at all what I expected. It really wasn't a story about steroid use and abuse as much as it was a storytelling about a life of recreational drug use and sexual promiscuity in the decadent 1970's. There is actually very little in this book about steroids or weightlifting, it's mostly the author bragging about how much ass he got and wallowing in self pity because he couldn't get his act together. What I found most curious was that there were no pictures...??? I mean how could you write a book about transforming your body into something freakish, and not have a single picture showing the before and after or even the during stages? Is that not the whole premise of this book? Also, the amount of weight he talks about lifting are not very impressive at all, as any half serious bodybuilder/weightlifter could tell you. A flat bench of 305? It's respectable but not impressive. I didn't start bodybuilding until my mid 30's, and with no steroids or supplements of any kind and not even super hardcore training I was benching 335, and I know a lot of guys that can do quite a bit more than that. The writing style is pretentious and overwrought, almost like the author is trying to impress us with his vocabulary and syntax. That makes for a very unnatural flow and a difficult, skeptical read, which I'm surprised no editor has told him yet. I wouldn't waste your time or money with this one.
