For those interested in big time college football and basketball played by students with actual academic standards versus semi-professional sports programs conducted on the fields of college campuses, this book is an easy yet interesting and important read.
Contrary to the NCAA's claim that all its collegiate members engage in amateur sports, Dr. Sack details how Division I college football and basketball programs are not academic-related, amateur sports. As a former big time college football player drafted by the Los Angeles Rams and, subsequently, as a university professor for over 35 years, he presents information from his extensive experience as a scholar and while working for the NCAA and on behalf of college players who submitted complaints against it. His work supports the important role of amateur and student-athletics in its true sense: athletic competition by students as part of the larger educational experience, not sports participation by young men aged 18 and over for the production of revenue rather than the emphasis being on their academic achievement foremost of which is earning a college degree.

Academic institutions, particularly institutions of higher learning, have a responsibility to uphold the public trust by striving for honesty and integrity in their pursuit of truth and scholarship. However, the current conduct of Division I football and basketball programs operate as a sham in portraying players in these sports as mere amateurs when levels academic efforts and graduation rates are so poor. In this evocative book, all that Allen Sack is asking for in his evocative book is honesty. Universities are purportedly one of our society's greatest bastions protecting against such hypocrisy.
Erosion of public trust has resulted from recent revelations of corporate greed and the too numerous illegal allegations of high level government officials over the past few years. Dr. Sack's work illuminates the similar type of actions that goes on in big time football and basketball programs today. Hopefully, this book will be one catalyst to help bring integrity to the way the NCAA operates and drives Division I football and basketball programs to be conducted in an honest way that encourages scholastic achievement as much as winning games and generating revenue.

The debate over big-time college sports, never far from the front pages, has once again moved from simmering to hot. Congress has been investigating the tax-exempt status of the NCAA in part because of questions about how commercialized college sports contribute to educational values. Athletes are challenging the NCAA on antitrust grounds to get a bigger share of the revenue. Against this backdrop, more faculty are beginning to be concerned about what is happening at their own universities and to the educational system as a whole as rampant commercialism further invades campus life through big-time sports. A leader among faculty fighting back has been Allen Sack, a co-founder of the Drake Group whose writings and public appearances, including work as an expert witness, have gained him wide recognition as an outspoken advocate for athletic reform. This book brings together in a compelling way both his personal story of life as a highly recruited athlete out of high school and a football player at Notre Dame under legendary coach Ara Parseghian and his fight, since then, as a scholar-activist against what he calls the 'academic capitalism' of the system under current NCAA rules.Sack distinguishes his own position, as an advocate of athletes' rights, from the reformist stance of NCAA President Myles Brand, who believes that commercialized sport and education can peacefully coexist, and the 'intellectual elitist' position of people like William Dowling, who would like to see big-time college sports kicked off campus altogether. It is a battle with high stakes for all concerned, not least the athletes whose exploitation by the system has been the motivating force for Sack's own campaign, now stretching over several decades.

And here's what my wife Joan had to say: I've just got done reading Lessons From The Dojo Floor. While most books written by Westerners on Eastern practices are afflicted by cloying, faux-mystical prose, this book is clear, pragmatic, and thoughtful. The wisdom is kept compact and bite-size. Perfect for those days when you're tired and discouraged and you need something to grasp onto to take you through that next practice. Lessons from the Dojo Floor is a compass that's handy, practical, and inspiring. A down-to-earth book that focuses on the day-to-day struggles we who practice martial arts face when we lay down our book bag, backpack, pocketbook, or briefcase, after a long day and walk onto the dojo floor.

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition: A Constraints-Led Approach Review

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition: A Constraints-Led Approach
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before I praise this book, I must admit that you do need to have basic grasp of traditional (information processing) approaches to skill acquisition and performance, and good sources for that information are "Motor Learning and Performance" by Schmidt and Wrisberg, and "Sport Skill Instruction for Coaches" by Wrisberg.
The book presents the best source on information on constraints-led approach. It is a hard read because it changes your old model/paradigm, and this takes time, energy and good will to change. Although "the map is not the territory", constraints-led approach much better explains skill acquisition and performance than traditional approach.
The book starts by explaining traditional theories, and then goes to explain concepts from complex/dynamic/open systems, like self-organization and skill as emergent behavior under constraints. This is very different than traditional approach and takes time to digest, along with concepts form ecological psychology, which basically states that you cannot research movement without perception and information flow, which basically lead to name the motor skill as perceptual-motor skill, because perception and movement are very interconected.
Further chapters are more practical and deals with guided-discovery, ecological psychology, implicit learning, external attention focus, modeling, modifying constraints, variability etc, etc.
I must say that this book is absolutely a MUST read for every coach, personal trainer, physical therapist or anyone involved into teaching someone something, form army, firefighters, car drivers, pilots, fixing cars....
Really wonderful book that shift paradigm on skill acquisition and basically start a new era on learning. There are lot of more work and research to do to make constraints-led approach more applicable (although there are books that are more practical in nature like "Play Practice", and "Teaching sport concepts and skills" and literature on Teaching games for understanding) although a lot of expert coaches already used this approach without knowing it.

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition: A Constraints-Led Approach provides a comprehensive analysis of the evolution of the constraints-led perspective, a recognized theory in motor learning and control. It is the first text to outline the development of a conceptual model of coordination and control within a multidisciplinary framework, capturing the various interlocking scales of analysis (e.g., neural, behavioral, psychological) and the many subsystems (e.g., perceptual and movement) involved in producing behavior. A conceptual model of coordination and control is important not just for designing learning environments, but it is also important for ensuring that learners gain positive experiences when acquiring motor skills.

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition provides the foundational concepts, methodological tools, and language to design positive learning experiences that facilitate movement coordination and control across various dynamic environments that require a high degree of precision of movements, from playing golf to performing surgery. The text also incorporates several learning features to assist readers:

-Chapter outlines list major topics and subtopics.

-Self-test questions at the end of each chapter provide opportunities for class discussion, individual review and reflection, and talking points for independent studies.

-Spotlight on Research highlight boxes provide more detailed descriptions of important studies to help readers understand how interacting constraints shape movement behavior.

-Key Concept boxes in each chapter remind students of the chapters' important concepts.

-Realistic case studies in the final chapter help both students and practitioners visiualize the contraints-led approach in practice. Each case study expands on the topics addressed in part II and encourages both reflection and application of knowledge to provide a solution.

-Additional readings at the end of each chapter allow students, movement scientists, and practitioners to expand their learning.

-Glossary terms are boldfaced in text and defined in a glossary at the end of the book.

-Chapter summaries offer a compilation of important concepts.Practitioners and students will appreciate the applied focus of Dynamics of Skill Acquisition, which outlines a model of human movement with specific constraints-led approach strategies that address skill acquisition across a variety of professions, including teaching, coaching, and rehabilitation. By learning both the theoretical origins and applications for implementing a constraints-led approach to movement skill acquisition, readers will gain insight into how the informed organization of learning and rehabilitation environments produces more effective and efficient use of practice and therapy time.

Dynamics of Skill Acquisition is divided into two parts. Part I provides an overview of the key theoretical contributions to the study of skill acquisition and introduces the constraints-led approach focusing on the implications of Newell's (1986) model as a template for understanding how motor skills are acquired. Part II discusses the relationship between the theoretical concepts introduced in part I and the practical issues facing learners and movement practitioners. It provides readers with practical implications of the constraints-led approach and includes hypothetical case studies, which contain examples of the constraints-led model in action. In particular, the constraints-led approach shifts practitioners' perspectives on how to do the following:

-Deal with individual differences

-Organize practice to optimize learning

-Use verbal instructions and feedback

-Direct learners' attention during skill observationWith the increased interest in the role of constraints to shape motor learning, Dynamics of Skill Acquisition provides a timely analysis of the constraints-led approach, helping readers understand how coordination patterns are assembled, controlled, and acquired. No other book presents the theoretical roots and development to the constraints-led perspective and uses a blend of both dynamical systems and ecological approaches to skill acquisition to provide application strategies for all people with an interest in movement coordination and control.

Don't let the textbook-style layout scare you away-as a diver who enjoys continuing education, and needs a little refresher now and again, I found I could not put down Mastering Rebreathers. Jeff presents his information in an easy to-understand format that follows the natural flow of learning. The "Introduction," "History," and "Types of Rebreathers" chapters lay out the basis of difference and development in open circuit SCUBA, the semi-closed rebreather, and the fully closed rebreather. Sections on physics and physiology follow. Scared yet? Don't be. These latter two chapters are designed to let any interested reader gain a good understanding of diving's effects. Chapters on theory and rebreather designs are also easy to understand, and leave you with an appreciation for the uses and limitations of rebreathers, as well as for the people who dive them. And the driver's seat chapters-"Preparing for the Dive," "Diving Techniques," "Post Dive Procedures," and "Long Term Maintenance"-give great information along with clear, concise instructions. Wondering what to do if there is a problem? No problem. Emergency Procedures" covers not only what to do if, but also spells out the recognition, and more importantly the avoidance, of most problems. The final two chapters cover travel with your rebreather and "Where To Go From Here," a reminder to keep your training current and dive within your limits.

First a disclaimer... National Geographic sent me a free copy of this book to review. That said, I am taking the time to go to Amazon and write this review because I thought it was a great book with lots of important information that I haven't seen in other dog training books.
The authors spend a lot of time up front discussing the responsibility of owning a dog and how to choose if a dog is even right for you and what kind to get. Great! Too many people get a dog without thinking things through. There is an excellent section on dog body language as well.
What I liked best is that the authors continued to say that you need to work with the dog you have, not the dog you wish you had. They clearly outline the basics of training manners, housebreaking, and some of the mistakes that can be made in those areas.
The layout and editing are good too. The book is set in bite sized sections with bold faced headings so you can skip around if you like, but I read it cover to cover. The writing has a good flow and there are little tidbits scattered throughout like this "At Best Friends, some adopters mistakenly believe their dogs will feel thankful for being rescued and taken to forever homes. Although the dog understands the value of a warm house and big backyard, she won't credit the adopter with the change and immediately show her gratitude by obeying every cue or signal."
I was only going to give 4 stars but then I couldn't think of any reason why a dog owner or lover wouldn't get something out of the book regardless of your training experience, so 5 it is.

For the size, this book looks at Seurat's work 'La Grande Jatte' in detail. It has a unique format developed by the publisher and folds out 4 ways. It documents a moment in time yet has become enduring. This book explores many aspects of the painting and also how it evolved, looking at preparatory studies. It gives an insight into the artist, his technique, neo-impressionism and what followed for Seurat after this painting. I enjoyed it very much. Safari: The Romance and the Reality Review

Safari: The Romance and the Reality

(More customer reviews)
"Africa is a paradox: a savage land, a sensitive land, a fragile land. The continent is where our journey began, where humans developed a brain-to-body ratio out of all proportion to that of any other creature in this living world. Yet it is a place where time stood still for hundreds and thousands of years."
So begins Molly Buchanan's ode to --- and chastisement of --- a continent. Or, more precisely, the wildlife conservation efforts of a continent.
Many of us like to indulge in a sort of collective fantasy, one where Africa reigns as the final bastion of diverse animal and plant life. To some degree, this was true until the late nineteenth century. Then, over the next fifty years, a complex combination of land mismanagement, human encroachment, civil strife, and indiscriminate hunting permanently destroyed many species while bringing others to the threshold of extinction.
In an effort to halt this negative eco-publicity, countries like Uganda and Kenya outlawed professional hunting in the 1970s. The results were unexpected and appalling. According to Richard Bonham, owner of the Ol Donyo Wuas Lodge near spectacular Mount Kilimanjaro, "When the hunters moved out, the poachers moved in. Nearly 90 percent of Kenya's elephants were slaughtered in the following decade."
The clash, as always, involves human economics vs. animal need. Fifty-three African nations are, like much of the world, trying to buy into The Great Dream symbolized by our Western lifestyle standards. The Masai farmer/ cattle rancher wants greater wealth for his children. Accordingly, he is willing to set out poison for the lions that prey upon his livestock.
One method of bridging the gap between the needs of man and nature is ecotourism. Preservation of wildlife is necessary to bring in tourist dollars. Where once the wealthy few went on safari (with the express purpose of killing) today's travelers are from a broad cross-section of middle and upper class households. Thankfully, the emphasis has shifted to image capture, the deathless commitment of picture to film or digital memory.
But things are rarely that simple, are they? Even with the assistance of notables such as Nelson Mandela, Dave Varty, Richard Leakey, Valli Moosa, Ian Player, Colin Bell and many others, the issue retains its barbed intricacies. There is a section on the excesses of ecotourism. Buchanan offers an example of how even good intentions can be overwhelmed by the "too muches." As thousands of people climb Kilimanjaro each year, pathways are being worn into the mountainside. During frequent rainstorms, the paths become funnels carrying topsoil into the Pangani River whose source is on Kilimanjaro. "It has recently been discovered that the coral reefs on the stretch of coastline where the Pangani . . . reaches the sea are dying because they are covered in silt."
Despite the brevity of this book, Buchanan manages to state succinctly the myriad problems facing attempts to preserve this continent's uniqueness. Mentioning the superlative photography seems nearly unnecessary since stunning pictures are synonymous with the words "National Geographic." Even if all one does is thumb through the photos and read the occasional paragraph (you will be doing yourself and the book a disservice if you choose this shorter course) it is still well worth the time.

Lore of Running Review

Lore of Running
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think it is important that readers understand precisely what this 931-page books IS, and what it is not. Dr Noakes is a trained physician, a professor of exercise science, and a highly published researcher in the field of exercise physiology. His meticulously researched book (the online references occupy over 100 pages) offers an authoritative compilation of the latest and best research to guide the intelligent coach or self-coached runner in the structuring of productive and safe training regimens. For those who lack a PhD in physiology but still want to understand WHY they should perform specific types of training, based on current research, this book is simply unsurpassed. If all you want is a "table" of training prescriptions with no grounding in research or explanation of validity, then look elsewhere: this book is not for you.
In my opinion, Dr Noakes has done an excellent job of extracting results from current research and translating them from the highly specialized language of sports physiology into language that the intelligent layperson can understand. Indeed, I found the book pitched at a slightly less technical level than the popular competitor by Martin and Coe---a book I hve also found to be invaluable.
Perhaps the most interesting feature of the Fourth Edition is Noakes' unapologetic challenge of THE prevailing paradigm in distance running; he questions the widely accepted belief that an individual's VO(2) max, or maximal oxygen uptake figure, is the key limiting factor in distance running performance. In a carefully argued Chapter 2, complete with dozens of references to research of the past decade to support his claims, Dr Noakes argues for an alternative "Central Governor Model" in which exercise capacity is primarily limited by coronary blood flow to supply oxygen to the heart. I cannot even present an outline of this fascinating alternative model in the brief space allocated here, but suffice it to say that Chapter 2 of his book, in which this theory is developed in detail, is alone worth the price of the book.

In addition to the physiology of training, there are entire chapters devoted to temperature regulation, ergogencic aids, injury prevention and treatment, apparel (emphasis on shoes), etc: all of the usual topics with which self-coached runners must eventually cope.
If I were to offer criticisms of the book for the sake of balance, there would be only two, both relatively minor.
(1) Chapter 6, entitled "Learning from the Experts" offers training programs from a number of famous past champions who raced over distances from 1 mile to the ultramarathon. However, as Dr Noakes points out clearly and often, many of these runners, almost inhumanly gifted with natural ability, became champions IN SPITE OF their obsessive, unbalanced training programs, and not because of them. For the person of average gifts, emulating the training programs of, say, Dave Bedford (who occasionally logged as many as 160--200 miles per week!)is a certain prescription for injury (as it ultimately was for Bedford). I would therefore suggest changing the title of this chapter to "Learning from the Champions." The accomplishments of these highly gifted people all too often had very little to do with "Expertise" in rationale training, as the current title suggests, and far more to do with natural endowment.
(2) Since Dr Noakes is willing to challenge the VO(2) max paradigm so openly, I think it is necessary that he offer some guidance on precisely what differences to the training program his alternative Central Governor Model implies. It is not easy for the non-specialist to see what amendments to training are implied by this alternative model; perhaps an addition to be incorporated into the Fifth Edition?
In summary, if you are a self-coached runner looking for an intelligent basis on which to construct a training program, then this 931-page book is comprehensive and has no real rival. If, on the other hand, you would prefer a 5-page pamphlet offering some training tables for the beginner, then I advise you to look elsewhere.

Tim Noakes's "runner's bible" is a distillation of international research, by one of the world's foremost exercise and sports scientists. Established as a classic work on running, it is also at the cutting edge of discovery: the fourth edition challenges previously accepted theories of what causes fatigue in athletes and offers solutions on how best to train the body and brain to counter it. The book is suitable both for sports scientists and for medical practitioners, and is a resource for runners who want to understand and enjoy their sport.

The main reason I picked up this book was to help teach my 3 year old the alphabet but after 2 letters (one per day) I am amazed at how much more this book really is. I am using it as a daily devotional for my 3 year old daughter and my 7 year old son.
What I really like is how it is designed to teach children to learn and live Gods word but it teaches them to do so out of love, with stong moral values. The stories are engaging and both of my children enjoy them.
We hadnt put the book down for very long when my children began to fuss over a toy, we reread the "B" story, then without any further prompting my son resolved the issue through timed sharing, even apologized to his sister for his bad attitude.
When it was time for bedtime stories my son asked if we could do more letters instead of our other Bible stories.
This book is a must have for every Christian family.

We are living through a technological revolution in crime that outpaces our ability to keep current in intelligence or to keep up on the street. Gangs, drugs, advanced communications, rapid air and ground mobility across both state and international borders - it is impossible to field enough police officers. At the most basic level offenders know when there is no police dog on duty in their neighborhood. That is when they run. That is when they go to ground with the officer. That is when they challenge officers with weapons. The Friendly Force - the police dog - protects handlers and covers officers. Most officer murders occur at night. Officers are attacked suddenly, often before they realize the suspect is present or observing them. Fifty percent are ambushes. Where officers are weak, the dog is strong. At night the K-9 sees clearly. His senses alert him to the armed suspect nobody realizes is there. In dangerous searches, foot pursuits, assaults, and fights, the dog gives officers the edge, apprehending suspects quickly and safely.

Workarounds That Work: How to Conquer Anything That Stands in Your Way at Work Review

Workarounds That Work: How to Conquer Anything That Stands in Your Way at Work

This book should be called a field guide, more than a book. I have had multiple times that my project involved groups. 4 or 5 people responsible for working together to get something done, and sure enough one person is late (and often finger points). One person late, makes everyone late.
Mr. Bishop's book gives excellent guidance. And for me it all started on page 17... we can't control others, but we can control how we respond and influence others. Lesson 1 - it's you who needs to change (not in a negative way - but in the way you behave) to make the work around.
Chapter 4 gives a strong overview of "framing" - the problem is often how the problem is framed. I found a few new techniques here for framing strategies. This is a pretty impressive section of the book.

All sections (page 167 is a perfect examples) have a "checklist" of questions to use in different workaround strategies.
Email etiquette was really a good read too. I think it is my natural tendency to think of workarounds as a face to face communication, the email section keeps the balance of all communication that is necessary.

While a few parts of the book were not new to me (but a good refresher), I discovered some new stuff. And the overall format was a helpful guide. I plan to use as a reference tool (hence I call it a field guide) going forward.
I recommend the book!

"Today's relentless demands of work require a new model of how we get things done. About the Book:

You've experienced the frustration dozens of times: you need approval on a project, but a key sign-off person is out of town; a product is on a crash schedule, but you're missing an important detail; you need to move ahead in a process, but company rules cause delays. What you need is a workaround.

In Workarounds That Work, Russell Bishop—an expert in personal and organization transformation—teaches the art of the workaround: a method for accomplishing a task or goal when the normal process isn't producing the desired results. Workarounds help you break through the tasks and systems that keep you from the important stuff. They even help you bring lasting change to your organization by doing away with frustrating institutional inefficiencies once and for all.

Workarounds aren't only about getting things done. They're about getting the right things done. To ratchet up productivity, your organization needs someone who will ask the big questions, such as:
How can our systems—from operational infrastructures to management processes—be more efficient and effective?
Do we make the most of our talent?
Do our teams work in isolation when collaboration would be more useful?
Are we wasting time, placing blame, and fighting fires when we could instead be fixing problems?
Is our direction clear, aligned, and focused?

Are you ready to be that person—the one who gets things done, no matter what?

Workarounds That Work explains how to identify problems that make workarounds necessary and then create the best solution available—without sacrificing quality or doing a less-than-stellar job.

With Bishop's strategies at your disposal, you can conquer anything that stands in your way at work—even when it seems like your organization's culture is pitted against what you know is best for it.

I can't say anything bad about this book. I bought several to build some jumps for my wife, anything to keep her happy. This book is very detailed if you are a detailed person. I have to admit that I bought "Jumps, etc." by Lisa Campbell and pretty much use that book the most check it out before you buy this one. Again I can't say anything bad about this book, it is very good, maybe too detailed for us simple guys.....

Part of developing the confidence to soar over the pole or rail comes from an understanding of the nature of the jump—and how better to understand this than to build your own.
