Everyone has a story to tell about their lives. Some are simply passed down through family generations by word of mouth, to be remembered or simply to disappear in the mists of time. Some are committed to paper for personal pleasure or to make sure that important historical facts are not forgotten. Certain individuals have the capability and the desire to talk about their lives firsthand, whilst others prefer their story to be told by someone else. However the memories are presented, it is important that they are accurate and told in such a way that the reader or listener, is entertained from the outset. `Crosses in the sky' does exactly that and whether the book is being read for historical research or simply for pleasure, Mr Bagley has produced a literary item that is worthy of a place on any enthusiasts bookshelf. He has related the life of Bill Witcomb (from boy to bomber pilot) in such a way that the relationship between the Captain and his immediate crew, will be instantly recognizable to those of us who have served in uniform. Mr Bagley has also shown that the end of a conflict does not necessarily signal the easing of tensions that have been generated in an individual by the experience of War. This book may well have been a catharsis for both the author and his subject.

Crosses in the Sky chronicles the life of the late Charles William Henry Witcomb, a not-so-typical American B-17 pilot during World War II.Told in a series of flashbacks, this book takes a candid look at Witcomb's entire life - his childhood, his adolescence and his adult years before, during and after the war.It is also the story of the metamorphosis of America from a pastoral, peaceful, neutral society into a complex and sophisticated military-industrial and technological one, evolving in the wake of World War II. More than a simple biography of nine men who served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II, Crosses in the Sky is the true story of a spiritual vision during the din of battle, a near-mutiny by a crew that was thwarted in an unlikely way, and an analytical glimpse at some of the root causes and effects of mental illness among combat veterans in our pluralistic society. It is a testament to virtues of preparedness through discipline and training.Paul D. Bagley is a retired emergency telecommunicator and police officer. He has spent 10 years researching and crafting Witcomb's story.Paul resides in New Hampshire and is currently working on his fourth book.
