(More customer reviews)Christopher Bartle has written a very informative book on dressage and jumping training. He starts off by explaining the biomechanics behind why we work horses in certain outlines, eg. long and low, and the way the horses muscles and ligaments work, and uses some good analogies to explain this to the reader. He also talks about the posture of the rider, and how this can affect the way the horse moves.
Christopher divides the training of horses into three segments, "nursery school", which is from birth through to the horse being started under saddle, "primary school", which is basic training in dressage and jumping, and "secondary school", which is the training of collection. The book is divided into chapters according to the "school" of training that the horse is currently at. This makes his system of training easy to understand, as the book has a logical progression.
Some of the aids that Christopher uses differ slightly from what other trainers use, so some readers may find that confusing. Also, the book does not contain many schooling exercises. I would not say that this is the only book you will need on training horses, but I wouldn't say that about any book. Just as you can't learn everything there is to know about riding from one instructor, neither can you learn everything from one book. None the less, this is an exellent book, and well worth adding to your collection.
