Topiary and the Art of Training Plants Review

Topiary and the Art of Training Plants
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As someone who loves the structure of formal gardens and wanting to try to create one on a small scale in my yard, I was very pleased with David Joyce's Topiary and the Art of Training Plants. He assumes his reader has some knowledge of the basics of growing plants, although he does give very general information on preparing beds for topiary plants. The book has sections on the causes and some solutions for established topiary in decline and how to correct a neglected and overgrown hedge. The book explains how to create some shapes in topiary along with step by step illustrations. Regarding hedges, it tells when and how to train widely used hedging plants. The book even relates how to grow pleached screens - training trees with flexible branches. There are sections on creating knot gardens, mazes, and climbers used as screens and canopies. The book gives a directory of a selection of plants for topiary and hedges, along with information on the hardiness, growth, size, maintenance, propagation and problems of these plants. It also lists sources to obtain plants and tools. The book is full of color pictures which will inspire plenty of ideas. It will be a great reference as I design and maintain my own topiary.

The Art of the Airways Review

The Art of the Airways
Average Reviews:

The main difference between early airline posters and later years was the size of the plane. The new winged transport was a prominent design element and the end location, if any, was hardly mentioned. Now, with air travel so commonplace and lots of airlines using the same jet (thanks Boeing and Airbus) the destination is the selling point. Geza Szurovy has selected some fascinating examples of the genre for his book.
Page eleven shows the first airline poster, the 1914 St Petersburg to Tampa route, in a tiny Benoist flying boat, that amazingly only carried one passenger. The venture lasted three months. Of the 170 posters shown there's plenty of choice to nominate your favorites, I like the ones that feature cut-aways of the aircraft and also the beautiful stylised airbrush rendering of New York that TWA used for their Transcontinental Boeing 307 poster from 1940, on page fifty-eight.
Presented in a book these posters create their own interest but I don't think many of them would have won any design awards. The typography and graphics, mostly paintings, just reflect what the airlines marketing department wanted. However ignore the type and look at the artwork and you'll see some wonderful illustrations from Cassandre, Jean Carlu, McKnight Kauffer, David Klein and Stan Galli and one from ace cartoonist Jack Davis, for Icelandic Air.
This is a large size all-color book but I was disappointed by the bland presentation, all the posters are butted into a light grey top-to-bottom panel on each page and even more annoying, on many pages, someone had the silly idea of adding small black and white photos of the planes that appear in the posters. This addition makes the depth of many posters smaller than they need be and the little photo, frequently showing plenty of detail, is just wasted. Fortunately this design treatment does not apply to every page.
If you are interested in the graphics of the airline business have a look at the beautifully designed 'En Route' by Lynn Johnson and Michael O'Leary, this concentrates on airline luggage label art and shows some super examples from airlines featured in 'The Art of the Airways'.

Capture the glory of flight in this nostalgic look back at the colorful posters that lured yesterday's passengers to take to the air. Constellations, tri-motors, and DC-3s are featured decked-out in the liveries of their owners and presented in stunning color artworks created by such famed artists as Norman Rockwell, Calder, and other popular painters. Nostalgic poster art contained within tells the history of yesteryear's airways through its free-spirited and colorful advertising.

The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys: And Other Off-the-Wall Stories About Sports...and Life

Although it was a book with numerous chapters, as opposed to a full story book (which is usually the type of book I prefer), James Duthie worked magic with this one. Every story was incredible, and I finished the book in less than 24 hours -- I literally could not put this book down. With great stories, mixed with uncanny writing ability, Duthie's book should be in the top two or three of every hockey fan's book list (or even sports fan, for that matter).

Praise for James Duthie's The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys:

" I was lucky to survive the day Duthie played in my golf tournament. Little did I know he'd turn the experience into one of the best books on sports that I've read in a long time."

- Wayne Gretzky

"Tragedy is easy. Comedy is hard. Sports comedy is even harder, but James Duthie, who we now know is as comfortable in front of a keyboard as he is a camera, treads whimsically through a sports landscape that certainly needs a smile. His is a biting wit, guaranteed to leave teeth marks."

- Michael Farber, Sports Illustrated

" If you like James Duthie on TSN, you're in for a treat. He's just as clever and witty in print. James is simply a great storyteller whose creative style will make you smile over and over."

- Dave Naylor, The Globe and Mail

"The Quiz sucks but Duthie's book is fantastic. He is one warped writer, but genius."

- John Tortorella, New York Rangers coach

" Duthie writes the way I played: With an edge, but never forgetting the game is supposed to be fun. This book is a ton of fun."

- Jeremy Roenick, former NHL star

"This guy does it all-he writes as well as he does television. That same somewhat aberrant sense of humour leaps off the pages. Sports fans will love this book!"

- Brian Burke, Toronto Maple Leafs GM

"I don't have kids nor can I legally admit to owning a monkey, but I do love hockey and Duthie manages to make them all work together. He effortlessly modernizes sports writing while respectfully tipping his hat to the old school."

- George Stroumboulopoulos , Hockey Fan and Host of CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight

So what's this book about? Well...

This book is about hockey. And golf. And the Olympic Games. And being a broadcaster, a sports fan, a father, husband, and son. And having an unhealthy fascination with Anna Kournikova.

It's a collection of things that marched through James Duthie's head over the years and spilled out into his weekly columns, selected, collected, and randomized for your reading pleasure. It's also educational!

You'll learn about:

Sidney Crosby's secrets
Where you rank on The Jeter Meter of male success
Why hockey's loser point has to go
The best four-legged athlete ever
What the clichés that come out of athletes' mouths really mean
What it's like to be upstaged by a monkey
And yes, how Duthie almost killed two Gretzkys on the same day.

James Duthie has been writing columns about hockey, sport in general, and his own twisted view of the world for over a decade. This book is the first and only collection of some of his most popular and controversial columns, with several brand new, previously unpublished pieces. In The Day I (Almost) Killed Two Gretzkys, he brings his famous sense of humour, deep hockey knowledge, and his passion for sports of all kinds to fans and readers everywhere- no matter what team you cheer for.

Often hilarious, sometimes insightful, occasionally touching and always passionate, Duthie's off-kilter view of sports and life shows how the spirit of sport unites us all.

A Game of Inches: The Stories Behind the Innovations That Shaped Baseball: The Game on the Field Review

A Game of Inches: The Stories Behind the Innovations That Shaped Baseball: The Game on the Field
Average Reviews:

On its face this book appears to be yet another entry in the genre of collections of random tidbits about baseball. These usually are disconnected factoids, often of questionable accuracy and often with some attempt at a unifying theme. In form this is just such a collection, in this case with the theme of "firsts". Peter Morris has in fact done something much more interesting and substantial.
The book is founded on solid research, going back to as close to the events as possible. Do we know of a first because it was reported in the newspapers the next day, or do we only have someone's recollections decades later? Morris is meticulous about letting the reader know. This could serve not only as a baseball history, but as a textbook on methods and limitations of historical research.
Morris avoids the problem of random factoids: of history as a series of disconnected events. A lesser author might determine who was the first pinch hitter, give a name and a date, and leave it at that. Morris puts pinch hitting in the context of the evolution of substitution rules, expanding rosters, and adapting ideology. We get a mini-essay on the development of this aspect of the game.
Similarly, the invention of the catcher's mask is put in the context of loosened restrictions on the pitcher's delivery, which allowed faster pitching and effective curve balls. These made the older method of an unprotected catcher standing well back from the batter less tenable, and protective equipment was invented in response. As catcher's equipment got better the catcher was able to move closer to the batter, which in turn affected aspects such as base stealing.
This is by far the best book I have seen for how the game was actually played and how it evolved, reported in a clear-eye, factual manner. There is no sepia-tinged old-timey quaintness here.
The writing is consistently engaging, not dry academic prose. This is a work of serious history, but written for anyone interested in the history of baseball.

A fascinating and charming encyclopedic collection of baseball firsts, describing how the innovations in the game--in rules, equipment, styles of play, strategies, etc.--occurred and developed from its origins to the present day. The book relies heavily on quotations from contemporary sources.

The Wisdom of Wooden: My Century On and Off the Court Review

The Wisdom of Wooden: My Century On and Off the Court
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
John Wooden and Steve Jamison have produced a final gift of excellence from one of America's greatest teachers. The mythical basketball coach whose name was synonymous with excellence lived his life by a simple yet profound mantra from his father, Joshua: "Make each day your masterpiece." This book is a testament to the core values handed down from Coach Wooden's father and shared with his own children and hundreds of student-athletes.
Unique Look and Feel
The book is constructed in the shape of an old-fashioned family photo album. The distinctive rectangular dimensions were a good choice for an equally unique man. I liked the compelling contrast between the cover image of Coach Wooden with a basketball and quotes from two of his prized pupils, Bill Walton and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, on the back. There are no page numbers to further reinforce the photo album ambiance, and the predominant font size is larger than usual. Key quotes were shown in a maroon hue. Perhaps as a reminder that Mr. Wooden was a former English teacher.
Vivid Pictures Paint a Life Story
I grew up watching the fabled UCLA Bruins from afar on television. Flipping through the pages brought back wonderful childhood memories of the impeccably-dressed coach with his precise teams that performed like a Swiss watch. Coach Wooden and Mr. Jamison provide the reader with a wide variety of images. From his early days of coaching, to pictures of his extended family, to handwritten diagrams of plays, to the many highs and extremely rare lows, the life of John Wooden is documented in significant detail. My favorite image was Coach Wooden and Kareem-Abdul Jabbar holding hands as the former student assists his teacher walk on the court.
A Few Memorable Quotes
"Coaching is just another word for teaching; you may have a whistle, but you're still a teacher."
"The bond between teacher and student is a sacred trust. I treated that bond with the utmost respect."
"When you leave the arena, a bystander shouldn't be able to tell by your demeanor whether you won or lost."
"Trophies are not success... Success is measured by the quality of effort you put forth to do your best."
"Basketball is of little importance compared to the rest of the life that we live."
A new colleague told me that this would make an excellent coffee table book. I agree, and my coffee table just took a leap in quality. But if you put this wonderful book on your coffee table, please be sure that it sits at the top of your offerings. The example, life and wisdom of Coach John Wooden deserve no less.

The Wisdom of Wooden is John Wooden's final book, completed just weeks before his passing in June 2010. In it he shares his most treasured memories and never-before-seen photographs as he looks back on an extraordinary life on and off the court.
Hailed by many as the greatest coach in the history of American sports, John Wooden is as famous for his personal philosophy as he is for his career achievements. He inspired, guided, and motivated generations of fans with his bestselling books on leadership, values, family, and the true meaning of success.
Coach Wooden wrote his final book, The Wisdom of Wooden: My Century On and Off the Court, in the last months before his death. Filled with his most treasured memories and more than 100 photographs, many never-before seen, it captures a life spent teaching, guiding, and serving others. Starting with his father's now-famous 7 Point Creed—including "Make Each Day Your Masterpiece," "Help Others," and "Be True to Yourself,"—Coach Wooden affirms the principles to true success that helped him become an All American at Purdue University, a winning coach at Indiana State University, and an iconic sports figure at UCLA.
Yet anyone who knows John Wooden knows his record on the court was only part of the story. In The Wisdom of Wooden the legendary coach offers readers a rare glimpse not just behind the scenes but inside the man; not just on the court but in the huddles; not just his maxims but his poems, those he wrote and those he loved; not just the people he inspired, but the family, friends, and fans who inspired him; not just the lessons he taught but the lessons he learned; not just what was on his mind but what was in his heart.
Ultimately it was the life he lived that served as a model for his greatest lesson of all: a deep commitment to family, friends, and faith—the bedrock values of the man we all called, "Coach."
Praise for John Wooden
"The Wisdom of Wooden has given me the life that I have . . . Thanks, Coach, for your faith and patience."—Bill Walton
"The Wisdom of Wooden is a lifetime of Coach Wooden's ideas on how to live life without sacrificing your moral principles. His life is a prime example of how this can be done--one that we can all learn from."—Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
"John Wooden sets an example for all of us by constantly striving to be the best in every aspect of his life. Throughout my life, I have found inspiration and direction in the Bible. Today, I also find inspiration and direction in the words of John Wooden."—Tom Coughlin, Head Coach, New York Giants
"One hundred years—what an amazing life. But here's what's even more amazing about John Wooden and the timeless verities his life has embodied. One hundred years from now they will still be talking about his accomplishments and his approach."—Bob Costas
"There has never been a finer man in American sports than John Wooden, or a finer coach."--Sports Illustrated

Real Time Leadership Development is a great tool for managers and HR/IOP professionals alike and also serves as an excellent reference to other, more in-depth and single-topic works. As a young professional just entering the IOP realm, I found it accessible and immediately applicable to my current position. The book addresses several key areas of leadership development (personal development plans, mentoring, leaving a legacy, etc.) in short, easy-to-digest chapters that are self-contained and can be read from first to last or randomly as topics are applicable to your interests. This work is captivating enough for the advanced HR/IOP professional, yet palatable for the line manager as well.

September. Where did it come from? I'm still looking for summer and it's nearly autumn. Greetings from Gail Gaymer Martin, an LI author since 1999 when I sold my first novel, UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR. Whew! That was exciting.
But then every book is exciting. DAD IN TRAINING is a special book to me, and I loved writing it. I grew up with dogs and cats in my life and, until a few years ago, rotated my pets between two dogs and a cat to two cats and a dog, then one dog and one cat, then one cat. My pets tend to live into their 20s so they become family to me, and the heartbreak of losing them is difficult. But my animals have left me with wonderful true stories that I've been able to weave into the Man's Best Friend series. In fact the second book, GROOM IN TRAINING, acknowledges my dog Jinx whose true story plays out in that book.
The idea to write a series about dogs began after the death of our daughter, Brenda, three years ago. We suffered the horrendous emotion of losing a tremdnousl daughter to ovarian cancer, but from her death, we learned so many wonderful things about her we might have never known. Learning them, we could grasp those things and hang on, and we know that she's out of the world of suffering and I think she's in heaven taking care of dogs that need obedience training.
Brenda loved animals, first fostering dogs and training them to be adoptable, and later owning two border collies of her own. They participated in agility and flyball, and she delighted in her pets. A series on traiing and adopting dogs seemed so appropriate to write in memory of Brenda.
This photo was taken during her chemo treatments, hugging her two border collies--Nike and Miranda--and wearing a sweatshirt with Miranda look-alike image.

I'm Here To Win: A World Champion's Advice for Peak Performance Review

I'm Here To Win: A World Champion's Advice for Peak Performance

I'm not an Ironman; my triathlons are strictly sprint distance. But as a cyclist and swimmer, I've followed the career of Chris McCormack for years, and I both anticipated and dreaded this book. Anticipated because who wouldn't want insight into the mind of the greatest athlete in the history of triathlon? Dreaded because I was afraid it would be some publicist-softened puff piece that glossed over Macca's trademark cockiness, mental game and trash talking.
Well, I worried needlessly. "I'm Here to Win" is brilliant and exhaustive. Chris bares his soul to talk about everything from his mother's death from breast cancer to the death of his best friend on the very day that he qualified for Ironman Hawaii. You get a lengthy look inside the mind of this great athlete and realize that as incredible as his talent and training regimen are, his mind is truly what gives him the edge over younger, faster triathletes. There is gold in here, and the blow-by-blow account of the incredible 2010 Kona finish with Andreas Raelert is worth the price of the book all by itself!
Then there's the "Macca is cocky" stuff. This book pulls no punches there, either. Macca comes across as totally real and authentic, which means that sometimes, he does come across as a cocky SOB. The section that relates his "war" with Normann Stadler and Faris al-Sultan after the 2006 Ironman World Championships is absolutely priceless. I found myself alternating between thinking the guy was an obsessive egomaniac and rooting for him to take down the people who disrespected him. Of course, all that ego is balanced out by accounts like his honest, agonizing story of dropping out of the 2004 Kona race because of heat cramps only to watch a bloodied age group racer carry his bike after a terrifying crash...and finish the race.
"I'm Here to Win" is a triathlon in itself: part memoir, part training guide, and part expose of the inner workings of a sport that fascinates and punishes so many of us. Whether you love Chris McCormack or can't stand him, you've GOT to read this book.

In I'M HERE TO WIN, Chris "Macca" McCormack opens his playbook and reveals everything it takes-mind, body, and spirit-to become a champion. Now he shares the story of his triumphs and the never-say-die dedication that has made him the world's most successful triathlete. In 2010, at the age of 37, Macca beat the odds and won the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii for a second time in what many called the most dramatic finish in the race's history. Macca's journey to athletic greatness is more than just one of physical perseverance. After coming in fourth in Hawaii in 2009, Macca returned to the island on a mission: He was there to win. A game plan containing a new strategic approach to winning brought him first across the finish line.Chris McCormack has dedicated his life to training for-and winning-the Ironman Hawaii, one of the most grueling tests of mental and physical endurance in the world. The race challenges athletes to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and run a full marathon, 26.2 miles, using all their strength and willpower to overcome the incredibly harsh conditions. In I'M HERE TO WIN Macca provides concrete training advice for everyone-from weekend warriors who casually compete to seasoned veterans who race every week to armchair athletes looking for an extra push-and provides insight into the mind of a great champion with excitement and inspiration on every page.I'M HERE TO WIN is also available as an enhanced e-book with embedded video and audio.

The Mobile Learning Edge: Tools and Technologies for Developing Your Teams Review

The Mobile Learning Edge: Tools and Technologies for Developing Your Teams

Full disclosure: I sat through part of Woodill's webinar at the e-Learning Guild site in early June, 2011 but logged off after about 20 minutes because it was such a snooze and I had better things to do with my lunch hour. I decided to buy the book because I was intrigued nonetheless.
I really tried to like this book. I sat down and read it with what I thought was an open mind. But I quickly got irritated that it was little more than a glorified white paper. The gist of the book is that mobile learning is here and, as corporations and learners and instructional designers, we'd better all get on board. I agree. However, the first 50 pages of this 250-page book is a rehash of what everyone already knows if they're even remotely clued in to the world of device-delivered information and learning, including a long, hairy history of device development. Then Woodill tries to make an argument that mobile learning is qualitatively different from everyday electronic learning. Well, mobile learning is a function of electronic learning; it has its own delivery requirements and constraints, but it's still electronic learning. My biggest beef is that there seemed to be little in the way of material that was specific to being mobile; most of it dealt with what we already know about e-learning, social media interactivity and connectivity, user-generated content, etc.
To be fair, Woodill says that we're at the very beginning states of mobile learning and there there's a huge amount yet to be learned. He does have listings and descriptions of device apps that allow various learning tasks to be performed. But, for my money, there's not enough hard "how to" that can be applied to mobile learning as a subset of electronic learning. So much of what's in the book seems to be material that any learning professional already knows.
As an instructional designer, e-learning developer and project manager, and classroom instructor, I was disappointed in this book. There's plenty of free information on the web that will serve you just as well.

With the plethora of available books on dog training, I'm continually baffled at the number of unruly dogs I see either ruling their families or terrorizing the neighborhood. Having taught training classes, I've seen many instances in which owners fail to communicate with their dogs and have great difficulty adjusting their intensity and energy level to the dogs' needs. This book is aimed at these particular issues.
At last, here is a book which is not pushing a one-size-fits-all training method and has no particular agenda to promote other than helping owners establish and develop better relationships with their dogs.
Joel Silverman is a long-time trainer of dogs for the entertainment field, as well as having trained birds, whales and cats for live performances. As a dog trainer, he was among the first to apply clicker training principles used on marine mammals to dogs. But this is NOT another clicker training book - the actual training instruction leans refreshingly toward a sensible combination of more traditional techniques, reward and correction, luring and patient instruction.
To help the owner understand his dog's personality type, Silverman uses a color-coding system which categorizes dogs by their energy level and social tendencies from outgoing, bouncy types (red) to shy and insecure (blue). The greater portion of this book is dedicated to teaching owners how to assess their dogs and how to address their training issues accordingly. For example, he purports using treats infrequently with energetic, drivey Red dogs, and routinely with the reticent Blues. Anyone who has seen a high-energy dog trained exclusively with treats bouncing around a room frenetically offering every trick it knows can relate to that! For a Red dog, a gentle touch and praise are satisfying rewards which don't kick a bouncy dog into mindless overdrive. But first, and most importantly, Silverman explains how to build a relationship with a dog before endeavoring to train - a critical step which many written methods neglect to mention.
This is not an ideal book for the seasoned obedience trainer - it is aimed at the average dog owner who may never take an obedience class. What it does offer, besides a better understanding of dogs in general, is some good solid instruction in teaching the basics - walking on a leash, sit, stay, come and NO. No fancy Hollywood dog tricks here, but that's okay - not all dogs are Lassie. As a former obedience instructor myself, my hope would be that owners who have success training their dogs with this book would be inspired to continue their training to more advanced levels. However, knowing these basic behaviors would keep many a dog out of shelters and many owners from becoming so discouraged as to eschew any sort of training at all.
Once one begins training, Silverman gives you techniques to determine if a dog is confused or testing, and how to deal with those issues according to the dog's "color." This book does not, however, delve into dealing with super problem dogs - dogs with aggression or extreme fear, but those issues are better dealt with by hiring a professional trainer who specializes in them. I'm glad he avoided them in this book.
Overall, this is a nice, handy book for anyone who just got a new dog and wants to teach it basic manners - successfully. I highly recommend it.

This exciting new dog training book is based on the never-before-seen techniques of experienced Hollywood dog trainer, Joel Silverman. In What Color Is Your Dog? Silverman presents his revolutionary new color-coding technique to recognize and then enhance dog behavior based on the dog's personality. Silverman coaches readers on how to develop a strong relationship with new pets in their first 30 days of ownership to observe their dog's temperament and behavior. The author then teaches readers to label their dogs temperament by color, starting at one of three behavioral levels from shy (blue) to yellow (mellow) to highly strung (red). The goal is to move the dog through training practices individualized for each type of dog to inevitably reach the middle (yellow) level. This book is entertaining, informative, easy-to-read, and best of all, these usable techniques really work!

The Game Before the Game: The Perfect 30-Minute Practice Review

The Game Before the Game: The Perfect 30-Minute Practice

I really appreciate this book. The fundamental premise is that we don't practice golf effectively (when we practice at all.) The typical golfer just "scrapes and hits" at the driving range. Hitting one ball after the other. Best case, this makes us good at hitting one shot after the other which, of course, bares almost no resemblance to playing golf on a golf course.
I really liked the first book from these authors, "Every Shot Must Have a Purpose" but I think I like this one even better because its information could be put to use right away in order to improve my game.
Beyond that, I also appreciate the insights in regard to what's involved to really improve. Unlike other golf book authors, these women seem to have the whole picture. I like the emphasis on the inner or mental game, but I also like the way that they put that in perspective with other essential ingredients... like balance and tempo (to sight just two examples). They also talk about the necessary skills, physical conditioning and more.
It's also a small book and easy to read (I like that), but most importantly, it's packed with useful and actionable information. Overall, I think that this golf book is excellent and highly recommended (assuming that you are willing to change your practice habits in order to improve your game.)
Birdies and pars to ya!

The authors of the smash hit Every Shot Must Have a Purpose put the golf back in golf practice, with a revolutionary approach that replaces rote sessions with dynamic, proven drills. As coaches to golf's top players, Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson have created brilliant new mind- body strategies for every aspect of the game. With The Game Before the Game, they showcase their unique approach to practice, with winning techniques that ensure those hours on the driving range and practice green aren't wasted on reinforcing bad habits. The authors identify three essential types of practice: • Warm-up: getting not only the muscles but also the mind in gear • Maintenance: intended to prevent your swing from drifting between rounds • Preparation: adding numerous new shots to your repertoire From there, the authors outline pro-tested drills that help you find your swing rhythm, visualize success off the course, simplify putting, break through skill plateaus, and much more. Each chapter concludes with a memorable "swing key" for translating practice into success during the real thing.

Escaping the Price-Driven Sale: How World Class Sellers Create Extraordinary Profit Review

Escaping the Price-Driven Sale: How World Class Sellers Create Extraordinary Profit

For the record, the quote in my review title is from page 10. "Escaping The Price-Driven Sale" bills itself as being "From the creators of SPIN Selling," even though its author, Neil Rackham, is not directly involved. Rackham is the founder and president of Huthwaite Inc., while "Escaping" authors Tom Snyder and Kevin Kearns are its Senior VP of Strategy and Business Development and CEO, respectively.
That said, my initial impression of the book is that it draws a direct connection to the importance of the "Implication" phase of SPIN selling. In the Implication phase, you work with the customer to review all of the variables, both pro and con, involved with taking or not taking action. "Escaping" points to the "sweet spot" intersection of Industry Knowledge, Business Acumen and Questioning Skills...that spot being "Business Impact (Value) Zone / Customer Discovery Zone"...as the area in which a skilled salesperson can soar.
There are four quadrants to the book:
1). The "Unrecognized Problem"
2). The "Unanticipated Solution"
(both classified as "Consultative Selling")
3). Unseen Opportunity
4). Broker Of Strengths / Cross-Selling
(both classified as "Strategic Selling")
The premise is that if a salesperson is adequately comfortable and skilled in each of these four quadrants and has done their homework prior to approaching a potential or current customer, they are empowered to "escape the price-driven sale."
There are no gimmicks here, no voodoo, and the "methods" are based in common sense. It should not require a massive "paradigm shift" for any salesperson to understand and embrace the principles, but make no mistake about the fact that this approach requires focus, effort, and determination. Readers who are drawn to books on "how to close the sale" or "cold calls that really WORK"...any kind of short cuts, and especially those who think memorizing a sales script is a way to get their foot in the door...are basically order takers and not salespeople. Reading this book would not be the best use of their time unless they're ready to roll up their sleeves and go to work and stop being order takers.
The authors assert that it is too easy for most customers in the modern economy to purchase products or services without the involvement of a salesperson. It's called "The Internet"...look at where you are right now! You're on a Web Site that allows you to purchase products without dealing with a salesperson, cashier, etc. The business world is the same. Your clients have access to more information than you could possibly offer them.
The nuance...and the selling point of the book...is that most customers have access to the raw data but lack the insight to cherry-pick it and shape it into meaningful solutions to increase profit, save money, etc. They are too close to the day-to-day operations, too directly involved, to have the objectivity and creativity needed to find the source of pain and obliterate it. That's the job of the salesperson. Do the homework, connect the dots, THAT is the value you bring to the table.
A powerful book of the 80 / 20 mode. 80 percent of the people who buy it will either put it on the shelf without reading it or will not put the principles into action.
The other 20 percent will "wake up to the new reality." Then 20 percent of THAT 20 percent will be the cream that rises to the top and actually puts the wisdom in this book to good use.

Mike Harlow includes some beautiful glossy illustrations in his book on protection dog training, however you would be hard pressed to use it as a guidebook to training protection dogs, and you might actually get yourself into some serious trouble if you tried. In actuality he seems less interested in the specifics of the actual steps involved in the training, but more inclined to rescue the reputation of American Pitbull Terriers at every possible opprtunity. I enjoyed the book, but it certainly shouldn't be used to base a training program on.
