Bravo to Richard for his hard work and dedication to the SEAL/SOF community. I was an instructor in BUDS during the making of Richards book and couldnt have asked for a more genuinely interested person to be around us. Richard has the unique ability of photographing his subjects in the most intimate situations, all while maintaining unshakeable rapport with instructors and students alike. Richard has given a much needed inside look (without going too far) at what these men go through during training. Hats off to Richard for a first class photo journal. BH

The book contains really basic information that is not a new revelation. For a better book on the subject read "Action Learning in Action: Transforming Problems and People for World-Class Organizational Learning"; Michael J. Marquardt.Marquardt's is slightly better and provides better real life examples.

This book brings together an interdisciplinary group of experts in bioethics, sports, law, and philosophy to examine the need for regulating such athletic performance-enhancing technologies as steroids and gene doping. The use of performance-improving drugs in sports dates back to the early Olympians, who took an herbal tonic before competitions to augment athletic prowess. But the permissibility of doing so came into question only in the twentieth century as the popularity of anabolic steroid use and blood doping among athletes grew. Sports officials and others-aided by the development of technologies to test participants for proscribed substances-became concerned over the physical safety of athletes and competitive fairness in sporting events. In exploring the culture, ethics, and policy issues surrounding doping in competitive athletics, the contributors to this volume detail the history and current state of drug use in sports, analyze the distinctions between acceptable and unacceptable usages, evaluate the ethical arguments for and against permitting athletes to avail themselves of new means of improving athleticism, and discuss possible future doping technologies and the issues that they are likely to raise. They explain how and why some athletes resort to doping and assess what the fair opportunity principle means in theory and practice and how it relates to the concept of an equal opportunity to perform. This frank discussion of doping in sports includes accounts by former elite athletes and offers an illuminating exchange over the meaning and value of natural talents and genetic hierarchies and the essence of fair competition. Having twins boys, everything was a challenge. Potty training being no exception. After trying for what seemed like forever and the twins being three years old, I was ready to give up. I purchased this video as a last resort, played it and in no time at all I had successfully potty trained my twins. I used this tape with my next child and had successfully potty trained him before the age of two!! I didn't need to push my children to learn, it just came naturally, with them wanting to mimic the video. It is a cute tape with such a catchy song,(which we sang all over town) that my children continued to watch it even after they had mastered Potty Training! There is also a parent section that has some great information and reasuring words of encouragement.I will definetly be using this tape on the grandkids!! Bring them on.....

Successful College Teaching: Problem-Solving Strategies of Distinguished Professors Review

Successful College Teaching: Problem-Solving Strategies of Distinguished Professors
Average Reviews:

This book combines practicality with theory, giving ideas for improving college teaching to the rank and file--college teachers themselves--and the department chairs and administrators who support them.
What is striking is the readability of this book--no scholarly tome guaranteed to cure insomnia, this one! Baiocco and DeWaters write in a flowing style that invites the reader into the conversation about teaching and makes this reader stand back and admire the way they use words. The descriptions of the classrooms of the award-winning teachers--"Studies in Excellence"--are thought-provoking; they show how excellent teachers differ from one another but have some beliefs about teaching in common.
Altogether the best book about college teaching I've seen. I'd recommend it to beginners and seasoned teachers alike.

A Level Playing Field: African American Athletes and the Republic of Sports (Alain Locke Lecture Series)

I'm a big fan of David Halberstams books on sports. Gerald Early's book on African American athletes is the equal of anything written by Halberstam. Blending the historical, political and culture influences and effects of sports, Early opens up a discussion for any serious fan of sports. I especially loved his chapter on Curt Flood, a very good ball player and a Hall of Fame man.

As Americans, we believe there ought to be a level playing field for everyone.Even if we don't expect to finish first, we do expect a fair start. Only in sports have African Americans actually found that elusive level ground. But at the same time, black players offer an ironic perspective on the athlete-hero, for they represent a group historically held to be without social honor.

In his first new collection of sports essays since Tuxedo Junction (1989), the noted cultural critic Gerald Early investigates these contradictions as they play out in the sports world and in our deeper attitudes toward the athletes we glorify. Early addresses a half-century of heated cultural issues ranging from integration to the use of performance-enhancing drugs. Writing about Jackie Robinson and Curt Flood, he reconstructs pivotal moments in their lives and explains how the culture, politics, and economics of sport turned with them. Taking on the subtexts, racial and otherwise, of the controversy over remarks Rush Limbaugh made about quarterback Donovan McNabb, Early restores the political consequence to an event most commentators at the time approached with predictable bluster.

The essays in this book circle around two perennial questions: What other, invisible contests unfold when we watch a sporting event? What desires and anxieties are encoded in our worship of (or disdain for) high-performance athletes?

These essays are based on the Alain Locke lectures at Harvard University's Du Bois Institute.

The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina Review

The Hurricanes: One High School Team's Homecoming After Katrina
Average Reviews:

I'll start out by saying that this is a good story. This book focuses on football, and the story of a team and teams coming together to rebuild their lives. It's a "rags-to-riches" tale that will surely one-day make a good movie, but it ignores the real tragedy that I was thinking about the entire time. What it doesn't focus on is the real tragedy of why rural Louisiana is dirt poor and uneducated. A year after Katrina, officials are proud to announce that the new sod is on the field, yet there is no school cafeteria. The scoreboard works, but there are not enough books to go around at school. More examples abound like this abound, but it is clear to me why communities like this will continue to decline as they focus more on their fleeting football success than on graduating educated kids from their high schools. A few of these kids will end up in college, and maybe one every few years will play pro ball, but 200 others will be poorly served by their lack of a decent education.

Extreme Ironing Review

Extreme Ironing

This book was a big hit with my family this Christmas. Worth every penny - and then some.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Extreme Ironing

In 2003, extreme ironing is the world's newest adrenalin sport, combining the thrill of extreme outdoor activity - rock climbing, mountaineering, canoeing, scuba diving or surfing - with the satisfaction of well-pressed clothing. Participants of the sport are known as ironists and pride themselves on returning to work on Monday morning in a shirt which was ironed at the weekend whilst dangling from a rock face or riding the rapids. From its humble beginnings in the English East Midlands city of Leicester in 1997, the sport has gone global, with the first Extreme Ironing World Championships being held in Munich 2002. Since then even more people have taken ironing outside, under the sky, where it belongs. Written by the sport's founding father, this book, illustrated throughout with photographs, is a guide to equipment and clothing; a description of the different styles of extreme ironing; and an overview of worldwide developments.

Soft-Hackled Fly: And Tiny Soft Hackles: A Trout Fisherman's Guide, 2nd Edition

Years ago the only book on fly fishing I had was "Trout" by Ray Bergman. At that time all I fished were wet flies. The flies were simple to tie and they also caught a lot of trout for me. As time progressed it seemed that with Dry flies, nymphs, pre-emergers, emergers, duns, and spinners life along the trout stream seemed to get more difficult and frustrating if not complicated.
Sylvester Nemes, took me back to the time with fly fishing was relaxing fun and simple. I enjoy creating the soft hackles at my vise and fishing them. It always impresses me at just how effective these soft hackles are considering the simplicity of their make up. Anyone who wants to rediscover the simplicity and enjoyment of fly fishing as it was meant to be will enjoy reading "The Soft-Hackled Fly and Tiny Soft Hackles"

Bob Buck is a retired airline captain who spent over 30 years flying for Trans World Airlines. He is also regarded as first person to make reading about weather interesting. This is the book he wrote to convey the pilot's perspective of flying through fronts, circumnavigating thunderstorms, and surviving icing conditions. If you are a pilot desirous of learning about how to predict weather, learning the tricks of the pros, and how to get there through the 'muck', this is the book to read. It is not an easy read, and Buck assumes you already know some weather basics, but it puts together all that you learned reading those boring FAA manuals, and Buck makes it interesting. (This is a review of the first edition, Weather Flying is now in its fourth edtion.)

I stopped by Joe's house in Ely to have him autograph my copy. We had never met before but he greeted me warmly, offered me cookies and a drink, showed me his shop, and added me to his list of people who want a canoe. This man is a national treasure and his canoes will be timeless heirlooms.
This book goes into great detail on how he crafts each of his beautiful, rustic, canvas-covered wooden canoes by hand and has given me a bold appreciation for how much work goes into just one canoe. I have no idea how he ever made a living charging only a couple thousand per canoe.
The author Jerry Stelmok did a fine job of breaking a complicated process down into simple text that anyone can enjoy. And National Geographic photographer Deborah Sussex filled the book with enticing photos.
The book sits on my office wall along with other non-fictional works about the woods of Northern Minnesota, and this one by far gets the most attention. It's a wonderful addition to anyone's library.
Enjoy!
