Tina Schwartz has produced a remarkable book for anyone--teen or adult--who has a desire to write as a career, as a freelancer, or just to exercise his or her creative impulses. She devotes a good portion of the book to novel writing, yet manages to offer valuable guidance for every conceivable writing profession. From poetry, cartooning and songwriting to reporting, editing and advertising, she packs in enough information for the reader to undertand what what it takes to succeed.
Writing is not easy. I have been a writer and a public relations professional for 40 years, and I felt at first that she was being too kind, but she does address the isolation, disappointments and frustrations. Her approach is perfect for young want-to-be writers: encouraging and inspiring, yet realistic. Scattered throughout the pages are profiles and interviews with writers who first got published while teenagers.
The book touches upon every aspect of writing, including getting motivated, avoiding distractions, and submitting work to magazines and literary agents. She recommends colleges, courses of study, and other books to read. I can't think of anything she left out. You could learn a ton even if you read nothing but the glossary.
