The Immortal Bobby: Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf Review

The Immortal Bobby: Bobby Jones and the Golden Age of Golf
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Having heard about Bobby Jones since I started playing golf at age thirteen, and having attended many Masters tournaments, I was drawn quite naturally to this book.
Rapoport serves as a keen biographer. While he praises Jones as the most gifted golfer of his era, he doesn't avoid including passages that show Bobby's warts. The book details Bobby's early temper tantrums, his longstanding feud with another leading amateur golfer, and how he missed opportunities to use his fame and good name to pave the way for racial transition in golf and in the Atlanta area.
Even so, Jones comes across very positively in the way he handled his crippling illness that drove him from the game so early. In my judgment, his most heroic deeds happened when he clutched a wheelchair instead of a golf club.
From the sporting angle, golfers will welcome the shot-by-shot replay of Bobby's most heralded victories. Also, the behind the scenes story of the Bobby Jones/Clifford Roberts relationship uncovers events known to only a few at the time.
If you've never encountered Bobby Jones in print, this is a great place to start.

Nymphs Volume II: Stoneflies, Caddisflies, and Other Important Insects: Including the Lesser Mayflies

This is an excellent book that combines so many different elements. Schwiebert has enough biology information that this was the reference for a long time; but it is really his famous literary skills that make this book. I guess it would date me but I can remember the first Schwiebert story I read in an ancient Flyfisherman magazine - you could always tell them because people spoke in italics, not quotes!
The book is chock full of stories and suggestions; in particular you can read Schwiebert's ideas on the ideal fly rod, fishing during a big stonefly hatch and the art of matching the hatch for nymphs.
The colour plates are gorgeous and the paper was very high quality - my copy still looks brand new. If you see a copy I highly recommend buying it.

I was in an REI store in Baltimore a few years ago when I stumbled on this book and promptly bought it. I had read a few other similar guides but I was still having difficulty grasping the concept of a proper Giant Slalom turn. Lisa Feinberg Densmore's SKI FASTER clearly and succinctly got the message across. Helpful photos of the "wrong" way as well as the "right" way really gave me an understanding of what I should be striving for. Although I have a long way to go, this nifty tome has helped me shave significant seconds off my recreational race league times. I have only one request. Lisa, when are you going to put it all on video? I've searched the web looking for an instructional video for recreational GS racers and none exist! With your broadcast background, you'd be a natural to produce one. As my club's racing captain, I an assure you there is a market out there!

Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals Review

Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book contains some clear and self explanatory audio exercises. I hate to acknowledge that most of the exercises could have already been performed by using a 'free' (computer) tone generator to explore the different frequency ranges. Beware, it will require time to learn to listen properly. I was very wrong to believe that by listening to the contents once, I was set. I would suggest to make copies of use a separate sheet of paper to answers the exercises. This way you can repeat it, over and over. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in improving his/her audio listening skills.
*PROS:
-Good and helpful exercises
-Nice correlation between the audio exercises and the freq. graphs on the book.
-If you have no patience to play with a tone generator, this book is well suited for you.
*CONS
-The CD without the book or the book without the CD become useless.
-You need to read the book while you listen to the CD.
-The CD is in fact an MP3-CD, so you may not play it anywhere you want.
-I have the impression that the book is kind of expensive. Many of the exercises can already be performed by anyone using a (free) tone generator.
- The book is kind of bulky to take it anywhere.

Audio productions are made or broken by the quality of the recording engineer's ears. The ability to properly discern sounds, identify subtle problems, and act accordingly to apply the necessary fix makes all the difference in the quality of the final tracks and master. The good news is that these crucial skills can be learned. The ability to instantly identify frequencies, hear hidden distortions, and instinctively reconcile conflicts in the EQ of instruments, audio elements, vocals and more are traits of those who have mastered the art of audio production. The best engineers have trained their ears to immediately recognize audio problems that the consumer and those new to recording arts would likely not hear, but that, if left unresolved, would result in an amateurish final product. For more than two decades, students of F. Alton Everest's Critical Listening and Auditory Perception courses have rapidly developed these skills by using the intense lessons found in this book and on the CD. Unfortunately the books and CDs included with the course were usually too expensive for aspiring engineers to purchase and were often available only in colleges, universities, or school libraries. Now for the first time these indispensable training sessions are available with this release of Critical Listening Skills for Audio Professionals. Through hundreds of illustrations and an accompanying disc containing high-resolution MP3 files with nearly five hours of narration of the entire course, you can acquire the audio discernment skills of a seasoned recording engineer by studying this course at your own pace, in your own home.

The Art of Flying (General Aviation Reading series) Review

The Art of Flying (General Aviation Reading series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book fits nicely in the "gems of wisdom" genre. The gems come from Buck's many years and vast experience as a pilot, both airline and general aviation.
It's an easy read, and you can almost imagine hearing the words come from the author's mouth in some small-airport coffee shop or sitting in a hangar under the wing of a small plane. Don't be deceived by the informal delivery, though -- Buck is talking about serious topics that affect your safety and proficiency.
If you want to learn from a veteran pilot and avoid mistakes that others have made, pick up a copy of The Art of Flying. Read it through. Then keep it around and, every now and then, pick it up again and read a chapter. The chapters are nicely "bite-sized," so you can do this using odd moments. You'll find yourself nodding your head and thinking, "Oh, yes, I want to remember that!"
This book is well worth the money -- and the time -- you'll invest in it.

Puppy's First Steps: The Whole-Dog Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, Well-Behaved Puppy Review

Puppy's First Steps: The Whole-Dog Approach to Raising a Happy, Healthy, Well-Behaved Puppy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you have never experienced puppy-parenting before, this useful resource gives you all the basics. Nicely written and full of tips, from puppy selection to dogs' sensory capabilities, with nice emphasis on critical/sensitive periods and on ensuring positive experiences during these times - the key to a well-mannered, well-adjusted dog.
I gave the book 4 stars rather than 5, however, because it didn't meet my expectations. I hoped for many "insider" tips that surely veterinarians have at their disposal for things like clipping black toenails, what those dog food labels *really* mean (I was VERY disappointed in this chapter - all ingredients are NOT created equal; they didn't even mention which ingredients are the top allergens), and balancing health precautions with socialization (they promote the largely-impractical "puppy party" method, with no alternatives).
If you are well-read, this book won't offer a single new insight. But if you are starting out with your very first puppy, or if your last puppy was long ago (back when you didn't train puppies until they were 6 months old so that they could handle heavy-handed punished-focused "training" methods), you will get everything you need here. If you know the basics of vaccinations schedules, grooming needs, etc. and want a book focused more on manners, etc., I highly recommend Trish King's Parenting Your Dog.

Though exercise is relatively easy to do, its influence on our physical, psychological, and spiritual well-being is complex. Even those who are aware of its positive effects are sometimes reluctant to begin. Why do some people maintain a regular exercise regimen while others quit after a few weeks? How does exercise influence mental health? If medical, health, fitness, psychology, and athletic professionals are to help their clients, they must understand the issues that surround the psychology of exercise. "Foundations of Exercise Psychology" presents a summary of the information to date on the psychology of exercise and offers lucid suggestions for practice and future research. "Foundations of Exercise Psychology" will help to shape the direction of the field of exercise psychology for many years to come, and it will do much to encourage young professionals to enter the field and to pursue further study. Students moving toward the exercise professions will gain a solid background in key issues surrounding exercise and health and make great strides forward in becoming competent and compassionate practitioners. The contents of the book go well beyond past texts in the field and include some innovative and thought-provoking chapters on little discussed topics in exercise psychology such as the meaning of exercise and the psychological and physical dangers when exercise goes awry. The text spends considerable time exploring the relationship between exercise and personality, self-esteem, self-concept, mood alteration and motivation - concepts and features of being human that are all intimately related. The range of populations examined includes women, children, dependent and habitual exercisers, and participants throughout the life span.

Souled Out? How Blacks Are Winning and Losing in Sports Review

Souled Out How Blacks Are Winning and Losing in Sports

I enjoyed reading William Rhoden's "Million Dollar Slaves" last year, but it read more like a history lesson than does Shaun Powell's excellent page-turner. While Powell offers some historical perspective on the state of black athletes in America, "Souled Out" is primarily driven by present-day issues. This is a big reason for my enjoying his book so much.
This is an engrossing, thoughtful read by a terrific writer and the book should encourage lively debate around many dinner tables, water coolers, and football tailgates this season. Sports fans of every stripe will find this to be a great read spanning a variety of important issues. I could not put it down! A+

Souled Out?

That's the question author Shaun Powell poses and ultimately answers with regard to the nature of blacks' participation in American sports. Neither blacks nor whites—athletes, coaches, administrators, owners, media, parents, and yes, even fans—are without blame for race still being an issue in the athletic arena. And Powell, perhaps like you, is fed up with the excuses.

Souled Out? boldly addresses the following dilemmas and more:

-Do today's black athletes and coaches have the purpose to follow the leads of pioneers like Jackie Robinson, Althea Gibson, Robert Johnson, or Tony Dungy?

-Is Muhammad Ali's great legacy being misused to justify the behavior of today's prima donnas and their preconceived, self-centered celebrations?

-Why, with tremendous models like Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Venus and Serena Williams, and Candace Parker, is black female participation not more encouraged across a wide array of sports?

-Are portrayals of professional black athletes, centered on gaining luxury possessions and material wealth rather than giving back to the community, ensuring that a me-first mind-set carries over to the next generation of athletes?

-Will more blacks break through the glass ceiling in coaching and sports management positions to achieve strong decision-making roles?

-Can negative attitudes about race, held by segments inside and outside the black community, be overcome so that faster and enduring progress can be made in the future?

Powell's answers will surprise, anger, please, and—most of all—challenge you.

Lowe takes us along the rugged eastern coast, from St. Andrews up to Montrose and Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen, "from heather, whin and sand, to points north," to Nairn and Dornoch. Then to the west coast, to Prestwick and Troon. It's not only the courses themselves that Lowe illuminates along the way, but the winding roads, the ancient villages, the farms and whiskey distilleries, and the people who call this land their home as well. Each step of his pilgrimage is given its due.
