Training the Three-day Event Horse and Rider Review

Training the Three-day Event Horse and Rider

Even though I know nothing about horses and, quite frankly, have very little desire to do so I found Mr. Wofford's Training the Three-Day-Event Horse and Rider to be thoroughly enjoyable. Now you are probably wondering why someone who knows nothing about horses, and actually finds them to be rather large, overly agressive and excessively messy, would acquire a copy of Mr. Wofford's book. Well, to make the story brief, I was flying the red-eye from Logan to DIA, after having a very disappointing and unsuccessful two day business failure in Boston. With five hours of flying time ahead of me, I had nothing to do (the movie was utterly sophomoric, I had left my novel in my hotel room, I had already read all of the airline magazines, and the airline "attendents" were being definitely rude and surly to say the least) but to commiserate in my misery with several poor excuses for Scotch. And then, I noticed that someone had left a copy of Mr. Wofford's book in the pocket infront of me. Low and behold, with nothing else to do, I opened it and proceeded to read on the basics and strategies of three-day-eventing. Somewhat inebriated by the time I reached Denver, I found that Mr. Wofford's book had miraculously relieved me of my pain and offered me a new found appreciation of the equestrian, with absolute confidence in challenging any three-day-eventing course. Upon leaving the plane, I was even a little bit unsteady feeling the residual effects of controlling my brave steed, between my thighs, dashing through the obstacles. Thank you Mr. Wofford for educating me through your wit and wisdom, and relieving me from Boston to Denver!

The Training of the Twelve Review

The Training of the Twelve
Average Reviews:

After the Bible, The Training of the Twelve has been one of the most influential books in my development as a Christian. Using a loose "harmony of the Gospel" approach, Bruce uses all four gospel narratives to show how Jesus discipled His disciples. The book's greatest strength is that it is NOT a how-to book on discipleship or a 12-step program for leadership development. Instead, Bruce exegetes the passages showing what Jesus was doing with his disciples and leaves contemporary application to the reader. Written in the late 1800's, Bruce's use of the English language is outstanding, but many people used to USA Today type writing (monosylabic words, one sentence equals one paragraph) may find it difficult. It is well worth the effort. I find myself rereading it almost every other year. The first few times I read it as a disciple - what did Jesus want me to learn as His follower? Then I began to read it as a discipler - how can I be more effective in the process of making disciples? Now I also use it as a parent - how can I shepherd my lambs the way Jesus shepherded His? Transcending cultures, I have had the privilege of using this book to train small group leaders in the U.S. and around the world. Theologically sound, biblically true, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to obey Jesus's command to make disciples.

With many ministers and religious organizations already using modern techniques found in management books, why not go straight to the source? A. B. Bruce's 1877 work The Training of the Twelve shows the methods Jesus used to lead his disciples and teach them to spread His Word. Though written more than a century ago (and based on Gospels two thousand years old), the ideas in this volume apply as surely today as they did in 1877, and church leaders (or those aspiring to be church leaders) will find this an invaluable resource. Learn...' how Jesus chose and trained his disciples' how and what he taught them about evangelism and prayer' the nature of true holiness' humility and self-sacrifice' and much more.

neither are big dogs. It's important to remember that this particular book is aimed at training large aggressive breeds. Yes, you can get your poodle to sit and stay and fetch using other methods. But this is a method for making sure your hundred pound Rottweiler obeys you when failure can mean tragedy. I've trained every one of my dogs using this book's methods. I've had German Sheperds, Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Filas. Every one of them has responded perfectly to the training. I'm not a breeder or a professional trainer, but my dogs' obedience has been equal to or better than any of the trained dogs that I've encountered. Some of the methods aren't pleasant; training soldiers for combat isn't usually a pleasant process, either. But the point of effective training isn't the trainer's assuaging his or her Inner Child; it's about developing RELIABLE control over a potentially lethal animal. The huggy-wuggy here's-a-puppy treat methods don't work when the animal is under strong external stimulation. Not a week goes by that I don't see the failure of the "kindhearted" methods, just in the course of walking my dog in the local parks.
The main thing with the Koehler method is to follow it exactly!
Some of the detractors here have deliberately lied about the contents of the book. For example, he doesn't advocate beating a dog"for 30 minutes". He advocates hitting the dog sharply on the muzzle if it turns on the trainer. Anyone who thinks that you can correct that kind of misplaced aggression with hugs, treats and "bad-doggies" should reconsider owning a large breed.
It's important to note that Koehler devotes a good bit of time early in the book on selecting dogs with suitable temperament.
In short, I recommend this book without reservation to those with ANY breed of dog who are willing to trade a bit of unpleasantness for a well adjusted dog with rock solid obedience.

Introduction to Technical Analysis (Reuters Financial Training) Review

Introduction to Technical Analysis (Reuters Financial Training)

This is a great book for beginner investors wanting to get an overview of technical analysis. Although each section doesn't go very in depth into each topic, you will still get a good understanding of how to use the different analysis tools to your advantage. I'm giving it four stars instead of five because it is a bit pricy, but still has a lot of good information that is very well presented. The end of chapter quizes and reviews were also helpful.

The Potty Book - For Boys Review

The Potty Book - For Boys
Average Reviews:

My son loves this book, so I can't really give it a "bad" review. He loves the illustrations (especially the one where Henry has had an accident on the floor). But I wish that it was a little more 'instructional' for him. The book never discusses some really important elements of potty training, like wiping afterwards or washing hands. The cover of the book shows Henry playing with the toilet paper roll, but never shows toilet paper inside the book and never once mentions what toilet paper is actually for. I guess this is a good book for very beginning children who just need to be introduced to the very basic elements of just sitting on the potty.

Every little boy's graduation from diapers to the potty is always a very important moment--and one to make both parents and toddlers proud! In The Potty Book, Henry needs to have his diapers changed so he can go out and play. Then mom and dad bring home a big box, and Henry is anxious to open it up and see what's inside. Is it a rocking chair? A bed for Teddy? No, it's a potty--which means that it's time for Henry to graduate from his diapers. This gentle and humorous little story is charmingly illustrated and told in verse. Little boys will enjoy looking at the pictures and having the story read to them. Meanwhile, they'll start getting the idea that it's time for them to grow up, exactly like Henry. So that at last, they'll be able to say--"I'm off the potty!"

I've read about 25 books on training horses in the last month and a half, this has been the last one. I'm amazed that there has been a bad review and that the writer was "horrified" by the author's description of the intelligence of the horse.
Well, read the title - "The TRUTH about Horses". As much as you would like to believe in your animal's higher intelligence, you cannot. Some are easier to train than others, but don't fool yourself.
This is an excellent resource for those starting out or for those who need to retrain or even just refresh their own perspective. I highly recommend it. It was one of the two out of 25 I actually bought - I took the rest back to the library!

Average Reviews:

Many reading programs for correcting dyslexia are based on the Orton-Gillingham method, which is presented in this book. While the method has been proven clinically and empirically (and I know of people who swear by it in my country), it is now surpassed by newer methods which stem from it. Arguably, learning letter names and memorizing rules are some of the main drawbacks in this program. What makes this book money's worth is the systematic presentation of spelling patterns and generalizations.

Professor Neu's applied mathematics courses at UC Berkeley are legendary for its clarity, wit and originality. Finally, a published version of one of his brilliant lecture courses is now available for the greater audience. Professor Neu's popularity has recently extended beyond the campus: his lectures notes have been circulating amongst a number of seasoned veteran scientists at one of the national laboratories, Lawrence Livermore, which is a further testament to the novelty and brilliance of his pedagogy. Yes, it is possible to teach old dogs new tricks! Many of us eagerly await the publications of his other lecture courses, which also will surely become classics!

This book presents elementary models of transport in continuous media and a corresponding body of mathematical technique. Physical topics include convection and diffusion as the simplest models of transport; local conservation laws with sources as the general framework of continuum mechanics; ideal fluid as the simplest model of a medium with mass; momentum and energy transport; and finally, free surface waves, in particular, shallow water theory. There is a strong emphasis on dimensional analysis and scaling. Some topics, such as physical similarity and similarity solutions, are traditional. In addition, there are reductions based on scaling, such as incompressible flow as a limit of compressible flow, and shallow water theory derived asymptotically from the full equations of free surface waves. More and deeper examples are presented as problems, including a series of problems that model a tsunami approaching the shore. The problems form an embedded subtext to the book. Each problem is followed by a detailed solution emphasizing process and craftsmanship. The problems express the practice of applied mathematics as the examination and re-examination of simple but essential ideas in many interrelated examples.

A lot of training books are done with the idea of showing you how to get your dog to do something, and if it doesn't work--you're on your own. RETRIEVE stays with you when things don't go just right--which is almost always. Here you will find as much common sense and uncomplicated advice as you'll find anywhere. The neophyte as well as the more advanced trainer will find many non standard but effective ways of dealing with problems that are unique to this book. At the end of each chapter is a list of common problems that occur in training--and how to correct them without shock collers, whips, ear pinch or any harsh treatment. The entertainment value is high in terms of training and trialing anecdotes. Bill writes with humor and message. This book is about dog training, of course, but it's more than that. Anecdotes scattered throughout lend humor to the book, and show attitudes and emotions that make sunrise in a duck blind a special feeling.

I bought this book for my 70-67 exam which I was palnning to take on 01/12. After I finished the first 2 chapters I was so frustrated and thought that I would never pass or understand the NT server... It is a kind of a book that makes you read more hoping that you'll understand what you already read later on, until suddenly the chapter is over. To be fair, I think there is nothing wrong with the material, maybe its just the presentation that made me dislike this book.

I took this book out of the local library and I found it so helpful I will be buying my own copy.
The text is very clear and simply expressed. It is possible to sit down and read the book from cover to cover without being overwhelmed, but if you want to just dip into it the chapter headings make it easy to find the information you need and there is also an index. The first part deals with general training of a new puppy and the later chapters deal with specific problems.
The authors give you an insight into dog psychology and their training philosophy makes a lot of sense.
The book has attractive and useful illustrations which help explain points made in the text.

A Potty for Me: A Lift-the-Flap Instruction Manual Review

A Potty for Me: A Lift-the-Flap Instruction Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book along with two others for my 18 month old simply to introduce the concept of the potty to her. The first book I bought was called My First Potty Book and it was pretty bad. The second one I bought was Once Upon a Potty which is excellent, but a little too advanced for my daughter. Then I bought A Potty for Me which was perfect. The pictures are big and colorful and the amount of text on each page is perfect for a short attention spanned little girl, not to mention the story is very sweet and well written. The pacing is just right. It doesn't simply tell you how to use a potty, but goes into the anxiety a child might have as well as the trying and geting it wrong and the practicing and then the trying and getting it right.
My daughter asks me to read this book to her over and over again, every night. As for the lift the flap concept, it's not exactly what you would expect. It's more like a page that folds out to another page. Picture a storybook with a centerfold on each page. I guess that's the easiest way of describing it. That little piece of interaction helps keep the little ones' attention.
This is an excellent book and I highly recommend it. I don't think you'll be disappointed.
