Web-Based Training: Using Technology to Design Adult Learning Experiences with Disk Review

Web-Based Training: Using Technology to Design Adult Learning Experiences with Disk
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For those already familiar with the design of instruction, there's not much new here. It's a very basic book that doesn't stray far from basic instructional design, with little information that's really web-specific. I believe the author's definition of what constitutes a web-based learning experience is too limiting as is her definition of what constitutes good and bad WBT. I felt that the author's opinions were too often expressed as facts, which may be misleading for the novice to either WBT or instructional design. It reads more like a report by a journalist or academic, who although she's definitely researched the topic, has no deep understanding of it, or practical experience. At least none demonstrated within the confines of the book. It's also written in a very redundant style. I believe it's overpriced for the value it delivers. It might be an acceptable choice for a introductory college class, if used in conjunction with resources providing more detailed/alternative views. A better choice for a business-world practitioner would be Brandon Hall's Web-based Training Cookbook.

Training the Horse in Hand: The Classical Iberian Principles Review

Training the Horse in Hand: The Classical Iberian Principles

This is a great book for people who want to learn classical in-hand principles using Iberian methods and the methods used by the SRS.
It's the best book I've seen so far on the topic of inhand schooling from novice through to advanced levels.

The origins of modern dressage lie in the Classical style of riding as practised at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna; this book goes back to those roots, showing how horses can be trained in hand - without a rider, using the lunge or long rein. Although most equestrian hobbyists do not practice these specialist training methods themselves, the principles involved are of exceptional interest to dressage enthusiasts and traditional trainers. As a result, this textbook is more than a practical training manual; it is an attractive reading package with excellent colour photographs. The author trained at the Spanish Riding School for eight years; he continued his training in Spain & Portugal; today he trains riders near Vienna.

Laura Joy Rennert has written an exciting dinosaur book that takes a new look at dinosaurs.
If you were to buy a dinosaur, which would be best suited for you? This book will help you find out!
My son is 5 and a budding paleontologist. I was quite impressed that there was even a dinosaur in here that he had not heard of! He looked very carefully at every page, beautifully illustrated by Marc Brown. I could see him concentrating and considering which dinosaur would be best for him.
We thoroughly enjoyed every page of this book and there is no question that we will read it over and over again!

Hey Pup, Fetch It Up: The Complete Retriever Training Book Review

Hey Pup, Fetch It Up: The Complete Retriever Training Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is hardcover, good binding, average quality paper, standard font size but the good layout making for easy reading. A substantial book, with 500 pages.
First published in 1979, Bill Tarrant was well ahead of his time; he's been using praise & reward training methods long before the expression "operant" became vogue.
Primarily directed to training retrievers, Tarrant's method & style is so honest - almost anyone wishing to train any breed will find the book useful and enlightening ... If there is one consistent message that comes through Tarrant's book, it is - NEVER HURT THE DOG!
Perhaps what makes this different from many others - is it becomes patently obvious even after a few pages that Tarrant is not teaching anything he has not tested & tried, he is himself unafraid watch, learn and try different methods.
Consisting of 20 chapters, the author takes the reader from how to choose a pup to training the first fetch, from how to transport a dog to emergency first aid, from housetraining a puppy to teaching the dog to force fetch. When & how to introduce a dog to water? ... How to train for a soft mouth? ... Gun-shyness, what to do? ... Tarrant deals with all and more ...
The book lays out training methods & schedules and offers potential solutions to difficulties & problems that may be encountered. Tarrant has developed his own training methods and procedure - some of which are rather novel. For example, he advocates using puppies to teach each other the beginnings of how to `stay' and to give to the lead.
Each topic is explained in-depth; each stage of training dealt with in detail.
Written with wonderful humour, the book is filled with anecdotes and stories collected from a lifetime of training & living with dogs, the book is both entertaining and educational. More than just a training manual, the book teaches us how to better appreciate our dogs, respect the individual spirit within each animal and have better understanding of our canine friend.
A wonderful read.

Excelling at Dog Agility: Book 3 : Advanced Skills Training (Updated Second Edition) Review

Excelling at Dog Agility: Book 3 : Advanced Skills Training (Updated Second Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the years since Jane Simmons-Moake's three agility tapes hit the market, I have attended a bunch of seminars held by many different trainers. While I have learned from them all, I still feel that the information Jane presents in her tapes and their companion books is the most basic, easy to understand and to follow instruction around. What Jane promotes is common sense handling that is feasible for all handlers to achieve, no matter their age, ability, background or breed of dog.
The first two books and tapes in the "Excelling at Dog Agility" series cover obstacle training and sequence training. The third book, which was just published in 2002, is subtitled 'Advanced Skills Training.' As was the case with the other two books, a handy reference guide at the end of the book directs you to the place on the tape where the skills being discussed can be viewed. The advantage of having the book to refer to, in addition to the tapes, is that it beautifully diagrams the various practice maneuvers and presents some marvelous course designs for practicing each of the featured skills. As I scanned through the book I made mental note of the courses I wanted to try. They looked like so much fun!
The first topic addressed in this book is advanced weave pole skills. In watching Jane run her own dogs I have always marveled at her ability to send her dogs into the weaves regardless of where the weave entrance was in relation to her. This is a vital skill for anyone involved in USDAA or NADAC gambler classes in addition to often being the difference between a Q and an NQ on any course.
This chapter carefully details the steps that will lead to a dog who doesn't need babysitting on the weaves. It also includes a number of suggestions on how to proof your dog so he will remain in the weaves, regardless of your enthusiastic praise or the distractions at a show.
Advanced pause table skills might not seem necessary once your dog has learned to get on the table, but could your dog handle a wet slippery table at top speed? Jane writes, "If you have not taught your dog to grip the top of the pause table to keep from sliding off, you have yet to address an important part of his training." Also included in this chapter are ideas on how to maintain the sit or down.
Two vital skills for anyone needing to make up for a slow dog or catch up with a fast one are the ability to (1) send and run and (2) layer. The first occurs when you send your dog to a jump or tunnel but you, the handler, continue to run ahead to where you need to be next. Layering is similar in that you send the dog to an obstacle while you run a more direct line to where you are headed, even if there is an obstacle between you and the dog.
Other topics addressed are obstacle discrimination, the 'get out' command, pinwheels, zig-zag rear crosses, 'heel and side' commands and advanced distance skills. The latter chapter includes a number of pages devoted to how one should prepare for gamblers.
Each chapter in the book starts with a section on 'How to Begin,' continuing with 'How to Progress,' interspersed with what to do 'if you have problems,' generously diagrammed so you can practice each of the skills you are trying to teach.
Finally, if you are one of those who lacks equipment at home and thinks it's sufficient to practice only once a week at class, Jane dispells that theory with a number of exercises you can work on when you're alone. Some you can do with no equipment at all; others are designed for those who have space for only one or two pieces of apparatus.
If you already own the first two books and tapes in this series, I'm sure I don't need to recommend that you run out and purchase this third. If you don't already own any of the "Excelling at Dog Agility" series of books and/or tapes, I would most certainly suggest that you add this to your wish list. Guaranteed, the instruction contained will help you progress.

Training Showjumpers Review

Training Showjumpers
Average Reviews:

Equestrian training books present a special challenge because of the range of types of riding that exists within the sport. What is interesting to a beginner rider has absolutely no draw to the advanced rider. Anthony Paalman has managed to communicate his tremendous knowledge and experience into an understandable text that serves the purposes of both beginning riders and professional riders. In reading this book, the beginning rider will have the initial information necessary to understand the complexity of the sport, while the professional will gain insight and information on often used but little understood training techniques and equipment. There are also jumping exercises described in the book that are invaluable for all riders to begin to understand standard measurements and design of jumping courses and fences. When so many equestrian books limit themselves to the "heels down" manna that serves no purpose after the first week of riding, this book stands out in its insight on training horses.

When I first perused this book, and saw the scope of innovations in communications that it deals with(answering machines, fax machines, e-mail, pagers), I realized that it was really what the world needs. We are getting more and more communications devices all the time, and we each tend to think that we can do anything that technology enables us to do. We all need and want to exchange messages with others, and whereas we are eager to receive some, others we can do without. To fulfill these desires, we visit our local Radio Shack. However, techology, instead of enabling us, has a way of complicating our lives, and we also forget the perennial principles of decency which do not change with every advance in technology. Miss Manners help us to live by these principles in a world in which technology threatens to become our master.

Prescribing the right aquatic exercise program for those with functional limitations is challenging, in part because the literature on water exercise is limited. That prescription is made all the more difficult when working with clients and patients with a wide range of limitations. Aquatic Exercise for Rehabilitation and Training shows professionals how to design aquatic rehabilitation and exercise programs for various groups and individuals across the life span. The authors guide readers in choosing the right exercises for their clients—including the appropriate exercise frequency, intensity, and duration—based on each client's abilities and limitations.

The authors compiled literature on water exercise from around the world and applied the information to a variety of situations. The book presents several current theories as well as a historical view for each theory and description of treatment implementation. The theories and principles are presented with the use of a regional- and system-based approach. Aquatic Exercise for Rehabilitation and Training also has the following features:

-Descriptions of the physiological responses—including those of the pulmonary, renal, musculoskeletal, and neuromuscular systems—to immersion and water exercise, preparing clinicians for how the body reacts to an aquatic environment

-Indications and contraindications for participation in water programs, providing an understanding of how the physical properties of water and exercise combine advantageously

-Descriptions of the responsibilities of various aquatic team members and patient management across the full spectrum of careAquatic Exercise for Rehabilitation and Training is liberally illustrated and comes with a DVD that demonstrates nearly half of the book's exercises and highlights key points for each. The DVD also contains printable evaluation sheets that will help you identify your clients' needs, evaluate specific therapies based on those needs, and choose the best therapies for your clients.

Using case studies as examples, Aquatic Exercise for Rehabilitation and Training presents current concepts, explains how to apply them, and assists readers in determining optimal intervention plans for each client. The text covers the gamut of aquatic exercise for rehabilitation and training, addressing all populations and ages. The authors provide information for adapting programs for various clientele: injured athletes, older adults, and people with special exercise needs, such as patients with cerebral palsy, brain injury and stroke, multiple sclerosis, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Use Aquatic Exercise for Rehabilitation and Training with confidence as you design exercise programs for your clients. Learn how to assess your clients' needs, provide specialized training for various populations, and prescribe neuromuscular training, core musculoskeletal training, and upper- and lower-quarter musculoskeletal training. This book and DVD is a valuable resource, no matter who your clients are, as you help them rehabilitate and train in water.

I am a dementia prevention specialist, and I think this is perhaps the most practical comprehensive book for seniors on this subject I've seen. This is a very broad field, but Dr. Bendheim "gets it!" While there are lots of tidbits in the media, healthy brain aging/ i.e. preventing Alzheimer's or other dementias requires a multifaceted or "synergistic" approach involving diet, mental, physical and social activities, sound sleep and stress management - which Dr. Bendheim does a great job of explaining in very practical terms. Both the book and DVD are loaded with innovative, challenging yet enjoyable exercises, including memory games using commercials from the past, which I enjoyed. Plus it's well documented. He provides a host of references - to both popular and scientific sources. Anyone over 40 who follows the insightful, practical advice in this book should see a significant difference in their cognitive abilities, and isn't that what really counts.

The Koehler Method of Training Tracking Dogs Review

The Koehler Method of Training Tracking Dogs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I can't speak to the usefulness of this book for training dogs for tracking competition, and will leave it for those who have experience in that sport.
I urge those who are interested in training for search and rescue to look elsewhere. The techniques in this book will not produce a dog who can do the job of SAR. Airscent work is not covered, and the foundational skill of a real trailing dog -- individual scent discrimination -- is not covered.
This would be fine -- it's perfectly okay to write a book on the stylized form of tracking done in competion -- but the author explicitly claims otherwise, and the cover photos and an entire chapter dramatize "the real thing" in a very unreal manner.
I am not one of those people who get together to burn Koehler's obedience training books every Saturday night. But this one is not for search and rescue responders or police canine officers.
I recommend the American Rescue Dog Association's book Search and Rescue Dogs: Training Methods for beginners. For those specifically interested in SAR trailing, consider Lue Button's Practical Scent Dog Training. Note that Amazon has her listed as "Lou" Button, but her name is LUE.

Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training Review

Essentials of Weightlifting and Strength Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Previously I read the books "Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding" by G. Thorne and P. Embleton, "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding" by A. Schwarzenegger, "The Complete Book of Abs" by K. Brungardt, "The Complete Book of Shoulders and Arms" by the same author, "Lee Honey's Ultimate Bodybuilding" and other. These books were good and very helpful as introductory to bodybuilding for myself, but all these books are not comparable to Mr. El-Hewie's master peace "Essentials of Weightlifting & Strength Training".
Mr. El-Hewie explains the art of weightlifting. In the book you will exactly find everything about weightlifting you wanted to know. The books I read and mentioned above are not even close to his project. What he did is a very complete and thorough representation of techniques, principles, with very clear and numerous pictures exactly where you need them, comparison and explanation of various weightlifting flavors like bodybuilding, Olympic style weightlifting, power lifting. You can learn every weightlifting style from his book, if you wish. You will find all the best exercises and the best of the proven techniques for all of these disciplines. The accent of the book is however on freestyle weightlifting.
From the book you will learn how bodybuilding differs from normal weightlifting and what mistakes you have done if you were bodybuilder. You will understand that bodybuilding is just a shorter version of normal weightlifting, and that shortage could be easily overcome with much more powerful exercises and attitude than you possibly had before! I tried the exercises myself and I can assure you that after years spent in bodybuilding, with Mr. El-Hewie's exercises I feel as reborn and would never return to poor bodybuilding style of exercising. One very important note: by changing your bodybuilding style to weightlifting you will avoid the injuries and inevitable deformations that you will have with your bodybuilding style (whatever it is). Also the feeling of whole body strength is so refreshing and powerful that I can't stop myself from practicing even at nights after this book!
One of the book editors was 100% right that Mr. El-Hewie's book is the lifetime project. It is so crowded with information, attitude, techniques, comparisons, and all vital info on the subject that you would find probably everything you need about healthy weightlifting training. This is not money-luring book like most of others I found, this is honest approach to personal practical knowledge of an highly educated and very skillful author.
This is the first edition of the book. Bad things about it is that the language is not polished because the author is not from English spoken area; the book binding is poor and the index should be more thorough, the glossary also. The book has long lines of dense text so it is a little harder to read if you are used to reading more luxury books. You will have to adopt yourself to the author?s language.
But, these bad things are nothing when compared with what you got with the book! Personally after some 10 pages or so I adopted myself to the author's language style perfectly. Even the author's language and style gives you a very warm feeling of having a contact with a specific person with distinguished personality, and giving you an impression as if you have a personal trainer next to you. About the dense text: if the author followed usual big letter size and wide empty page margins, you would face not a 540 pages book, but maybe 2,500 pages and proportionally expensive one. So there is a good point in keeping the size down, right?
All in all, if you ever intended to make your life healthy and use weights to improve it, this book cannot be overlooked. And if you like and practice weightlifting or bodybuilding like myself you would enjoy every single page of it. All possible recommendations, with 5 stars, I do not believe other titles come close to this master peace!
Additional note: I recommend you to buy this book and the book The Weightlifting Encyclopedia: A Guide to World Class Performance -- by Arthur J. Drechsler. The Drechsler`s book is almost with no pictures inside, but the two books complements each other beautifully.

Like the first edition, this second edition is intended to serve as a compendium of those aspects of Weightlifting and Weight-Training essential to the development of physical strength. A prominent feature of this book is the in-depth coverage of scientific and medical aspects of a forgotten sport. In this second edition, all efforts were made to revise the first edition and correct the typographical errors in spelling and grammar. The book Index and Glossary have been restructured more efficiently. In this edition, chapters six and seven, of the first edition, are consolidated into one chapter, with complete restructuring of the anatomical figures. The following two new chapters are added: Chapter seven –"Warm-up and Stretching" eases the difficulty of planning training without weight, prior to venturing into vigorous lifting. Chapter twenty one –"Performance Analysis"- immensely enhances the visual understanding of the dynamics of Weightlifting and the functional anatomy of the human body.It contains 395 impressive photographs of international Olympic weightlifters, beginning by Vasily Alxeev and Pyrros Dimas, and ending by Reza Zadeh. With colossal collections of annotated photographic art work, the second edition becomes a must have reference on weightlifting, athletic performance, human strife for glory, health, and graceful existence. The second edition adheres to the basic premise of the first edition of emphasizing axial training with vehement zeal. This is supported extensively by the hundreds of colorful photographs, drawings, and personal narrations. The very unique aspect of the second edition is the extensive elaboration on performance analysis of contemporary weightlifters by an engineer, physician, weightlifter, and math teacher.

You'll learn how to choose the sporting breed (retriever or pointer) best suited for your needs, how to choose a breeder, and how to evaluate a litter and pick a puppy. Next, you'll see how to introduce the puppy to your home and family, and tips for housebreaking and teaching your dog the word "no." From there, you'll learn how to teach the young dog basic obedience commands such as sit, stay, come, heel, down, and kennel. Once the basics are mastered, you and your dog will progress to more advanced drills for learning the primary hunting skills, such as retrieving and pointing. You'll even learn how the nation's top trainers troubleshoot some of the more common problems you'll face in the field. The final chapters discuss the following topics: introducing your dog to the sound of a gun, competing in field trials and hunt tests, using an electronic collar, and keeping your sporting dog happy and healthy.'

He presents the research fundamentals, but also considers the feasibility of many processes used by researchers--offering options to those of us who need evaluation, but work in the 'real-world'. This is by far the best book on evaluation!

I bought this CD and songbook for my daughter and we have loved it! I gave it to her about two weeks before we started potty training as way to talk about the process of going potty and just to make it all a little more fun. She loved the songs and the fun words. She listens to the CD often and we both learned the words to most all of the songs. We would pick one to sing while she was sitting on the potty. The tunes of the songs are familiar to little kids and there are cute, easy to learn words. I have loved this CD and have enjoyed watching my daughter get excited about potty training because of it. This is a must have for those kids who love music.
