Point: Training the All-Seasons Birddog Review

I have read many books on training pointing dogs, and have trained with some very fine trainers in the past. While I do not agree with all the training techniques (such as the author's mannor of progressing from point, to steady to wing and shot), I found other useful information in every chapter. I was particularly interested in how the author described the way various breeds react to different training - for example, a Brittany will generally respond to a very soft taining hand and lots of praise; while a German Shorthair will (generally) respond to a stronger hand with less praise. This is important to me as I'm about to start with a GSP, having trained primarily Brittanies in the past. Another aspect of this book which I found both refreshing and educational, was that the author consulted with various professional trainers - both to provide their perspective of the breed they work with, and to give the reader other opinions. Most dog books give the reader only the author's opinion, and as anyone who trains dogs knows, opinions vary. This book has earned a place on my shelf next to what I consider to be the best of the best of gun dog training books. Also, it is an entertaining read.

After 22 years of practicing the art of training and developing learning interventions, I wanted to explore two themes: 1) why so many training interventions are met with resistance and 2) how to generate improved levels of partnering and respect from the operating departments we serve.
This book and the model it presents are the result. The book is filled with real hands on examples that have worked for me. It is my hope that by reading this book you will be more effective with less effort and your work will be honored and appropriately recognized.

My Big Girl Potty Review

My Big Girl Potty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Both Mommy and Daddy actively participating in Ashley's potty training process. Ashley realistic transitions from diapers to "special big-girl underpants" over time, not instantly. Author Joanna Cole uses questions to draw the child into the story ("Do you wear diapers, too?") as an encouraging parent would. The story concludes with ten common sense tips, such as "Don't rush!" and "Never scold or punish." and "Use a diaper at nap time..."
We have read almost every potty book available on the market as of 9/2003 (over two dozen!). Most fit into two categories: INSTRUCTIONAL books that introduce the skills needed to master the potty; and those that are primarily ENTERTAINING, for children who understand what is supposed to happen on the potty, but need extra time to make it happen.
I think My Big Girl Potty fits more in the INSTRUCTIONAL category for the following reasons:
1) It identifies the purpose of the potty.
2) It specifies bodily functions such as "poop" and "pee."
3) Shows the transition from diapers to big kid underwear.
4) Includes the hand washing step.
For other potty books that are instructional, check out What to Expect When You Use the Potty by Heidi Murkoff or You Can Go to the Potty by Martha Sears.

Training Retreivers and Spaniels to Hunt 'Em Up Review

Training Retreivers and Spaniels to Hunt 'Em Up
Average Reviews:

After having read over twenty books on the subject of dog training/handling, I place this one at the top!
Not only does this book guide you step-by-step through the early stages of training a dog (referred to as the "Show Pup" stage), it guides you to a finished/polished hunting dog as well.
What particularly appeals to me is the method of training. It is thorough, easy to understand, and if followed correctly will result in a "tail wagging" confident, bold hunting dog.
I have had the opportunity to attend a training session with the co-author, George Hickox and found that the book correlates quite closely with his class material. The wealth of knowledge obtained from this book is comprised of a lifetime of training.
I am currently teaching a 9-month old Lab following the books outline. I am extremely pleased with how well my dog is learning while maintaining her style and utilizing the instincts she was born with.
I wish everyone the very best in your training.
Regards,
Ron

I bought this for my father in law, Ralph Myers.
He was in ASTP and was sent to Ohio State in the program.
The book has brought back many memories for him and perfectly describes the feelings that he had at the time.
The part about feeling guilty for being held out of active duty while his friends were risking their lives was very true.
I would recommend this to anyone who is remotely aware of ASTP.

Realize they are two very different books! If you are looking for something to benefit your practice then "Buddhism with an Attitude" is the way to go. Although repetitive at times, this itself is helpful, and it is written in a more instructional tone. If you feel your practice has fully matured (lucky you) and you are simply interested in a concise, more academic exposition of the seven point mind training, then "The Seven-Point Mind Training" is the one for you. Also, for being more condensed, the "The Seven-Point Mind Training", will be the book you will want to carry around once you are familiar with Lojong practice.

Horses Never Lie: The Heart of Passive Leadership (Second Edition) Review

Horses Never Lie: The Heart of Passive Leadership (Second Edition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Horses Never Lie" was my first foray into Mark Rashid territory, and I admit it was with some trepidation. I was mildly skeptical of the glowing reviews, wondering if "clinic-junkies" wrote them all. I couldn't have been more off-base, and am sorry it took me so long to read this book!
Many readers may already be familiar with the Tom Dorrance / Ray Hunt schools of thought. Mark, however, takes what are essentially the same general, but amorphous, concepts and makes them understandable for the masses and adds to them. He effectively presents the ideal of "quiet, consistent" behavior around the horse to deepen the horse-human bond. "Quiet consistency" is an elusive concept, deceptively simple to understand in the abstract, but rather difficult to employ in practical terms. He contrasts the passive leader (one who is quietly consistent, dependable) with the dominant "alpha horse" theory, showing how one attracts (truly earns) respect, while the other commands (demands) it. Mark effectively presents his ideas by relating his own frustrations as an inexperienced horseman. These examples - painfully recognizable to the reader! - illustrate how he transformed his own way of thinking, guided by the mentor of sorts he describes as "the old man." Mark also describes his experiences of more recent years, when he employs his "new" ideas in several types of situations but always with the same results.
Mark brilliantly proves his main point in the very way he has written this book. The leader who is more likely to be followed is the one that sets the example, quietly and consistently, and lets the followers voluntarily choose. In "Horses Never Lie," the reader similarly becomes drawn to Mark's ideas, which he presents in a low-key, take it or leave it fashion, and the readers will no doubt choose to follow.
This book really is about the philosophy of the horse-human relationship. It is not a step-by-step training guide. But there are extremely practical tips that the reader can immediately employ. They are not, however, simple riding exercises or devices. Again, the value of Mark's work is in shifting one's attention to the things that are already happening. For example, one of these points involves recognition of the horses' "try." Mark explains how barely perceptible to most riders the horse reacts in response to a cue, and surprisingly how often the horse really does try. Most riders simply ignore these subtle responses, waiting for the finished, perfect result. By truly recognizing the "try," and following through with positive acknowledgement of it, the reader will see an almost immediate strengthening of horse-human communication, and resulting performance. Then the human's task is to do that consistently, always. . . Mark's book awakens the reader to the things that matter in the human-horse relationship. He shows what happens to the well-meaning rider who becomes so focused on technique or clinics or the "quick fix" but not the horse itself.
Mark's work is a thought-provoking, beautifully written book, engaging in style. It is not too soon for this to be a classic.

A revolutionary approach to the techniques of working with horses, by a renowned instructor.
In Horses Never Lie, renowned horse trainer Mark Rashid challenges the conventional wisdom of 'alpha leadership" and teaches the reader to become a 'passive leader"-a counterpart to the kind of horse other members of a herd choose to associate with and to follow. Applying Rashid's principles and techniques helps cultivate horse personalities that are responsive and dependable regardless of the rider. Reliving Rashid's experiences with him, you will come to feel the same sort of compassion and appreciation for your horses that you do for the people in your life. This new edition features added introductory notes for each chapter that contribute to a more complete understanding of Rashid's methods and philosophy. 16 black-and-white illustrations

I've only coached men's college teams, but I'm convinced Anson's principles represent a foundation for the future of coaching -- for athletes of either sex. Competition is fun and practices need to be fun. The days of drill sergeant as coaching model are over.
Kids from most countries now have hundreds of choices in terms of different sports and entertainment. Every minute of practice needs to be fun or they'll do something else. And it's only going to get worse.
Obviously the "competitive caldron" can create women's US college soccer champions (UNC won the title again in 2000), but it may also be our best chance to lure the upcoming Sega generation into team sports.

My daughter has had a poo poo problem for three years and FINALLY!!!!.....I purchased the book and from the first time I read it to her she started to relate to Ryan. She wanted me to read her the book at least five times a night and when she was on the toilet. People don't understand the late nights crying on the toilet for three hours at a time unless they have been through something like this. My daughter was in pain every day and Ryan has the exact symptoms as my daughter had. I really wanted to thank the author of this book. I also purchased one for my daughters doctor. If your child has this problem please buy this book it really has done wonders for my daughter and the family.

If you're looking for more serious information and training for SAR dogs these is a GREAT book. It's clear, well written with serious information on what a SAR dog AND handler must be like. It takes you from step 1 (choosing a puppy) to having a full operational SAR dog (radio communication, handler's, training step by step, etc).
So, why 4 stars and not 5? This book isn't very open to different techniques, methods, dogs or info from around the world. For wood search it's very good. If you want info on avalanche or disaster search it's not very complete.

The Shaolin Workout: 28 Days to Transforming Your Body and Soul the Warrior's Way Review

The Shaolin Workout: 28 Days to Transforming Your Body and Soul the Warrior's Way
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is, in short, the best book on the basics of martial arts I have ever come across. It is inspirational, well set up and the routines will work wonders for anyone, if they follow through with the books premise, which is to work with it every single day for 28 days. Continue with the program after the 28 days and the book may change your whole life.
Surprisingly, it seems quite a few people are giving this book very negative reviews - claiming that the excercises within are too basic and too simple ... that you can learn them in any martial arts class. I very much disagree with this.
I have over fifteen years of experience in the martial arts, and have taught several styles at various dojos throughout Scandinavia, Scotland, Japan and the US. During my career, I have trained with some of Japan's elite MMA fighters, British and European karate champions, fought and defeated grappling champions and have had the priviledge of studying under some of the most learned figures in martial arts today.
This of course does not mean I am automatically right about whatever I say on this topic - all it means is I have some experience to draw on and have been down a lot of roads that were dead ends. And it is from experience that I believe this is a very, very useful book.
This book teaches the reader basics and basics only. Some may find this annoying, but I cannot stress enough just how important those basics are and how well they must be perfected for a student to advance. One of the books winning points is how well this book stresses the beauty and grace of basics, instead of just treating them as some sort of initiation ritual that must be completed before the student can move on to the `real stuff'. I have seen so-called beginners, who trained their basics and basics only solidly and with utter dedication, absolutely floor much higher ranking students in contests, higher ranking students who just learnt the basics and then immediately moved on to all that stuff most of us find so cool: flashy forms, complex moves and the like.
Flashy forms are icing on the cake, nothing more, nothing less. If you want to move like a character out of a martial arts flick - do the basics slowly, properly and with utter dedication, and you will be moving in ways you never believed possible. If you can perfect the moves in this book, learning a form - any form - will be a snap for you, because you have already learnt every aspect of the body's mechanics ... and that is in essence what forms really are: a reshuffling of body mechanics you ought already know. Train with real dedication and this book will make you a more lethal martial artist than 90% of the enthusiasts I have ever met.
It is not easy and it takes a lot of work, but nothing worth having comes without a price.
So, after all the praise, why only four stars and not five? Because the stretches and moves, while wonderful, are in my opinion taught without regard to safety and may likely lead to injury if not performed with care. The author thrusts an attitude of reckless abandon on the reader, which is the only right attitude to have when learning something new, but regardless of this, safety ought always be a factor - especially for beginners, who through no fault of their own do not yet have proper knowledge of safety and the body's limits. If you are injured, you can't train and may even make the very natural mistake of thinking something worthwhile is actually not for you.

This book was first published in 1951 and has been updated periodically since. This is the 1982, forth edition being reviewed. The photos are in black and white but quite good. The book gives a good overview of the history of this particular breed, it's care, breeding, training, grooming all all inbetween. This is one of the most complete works addressing a single breed I know of. For those who love this particular breed, this is a book you should really own. Over the past twenty years, the breed standards have changes somewhat (showing), unfortunately, but this does not distract from this work at all. For the history of the breed alone, this work is well worth the money. Recommend this one highly.

I have his personally autographed book. I was fascinated to meet him and explore his work when he visited LA in 1993.He is probably the most controversial Infant Swim Researcher in the World. Mothers giving birth to babies in the Baltic Sea with dolphins near by? Raising his own daughter in a specially built aquarium because of his belief that he could strenthen her immune system? His work is shaped by his belief in human adaptation. He consistently used the hardening process of working with infants and toddlers in ice cold water believing this would strengthen their immunity.Controversial by all standards in the infant swim world, neverthe less he is a pioneer of sorts showing that tiny babies have an innate ability to not only survive but actually adapt to what many would consider an unfriendly environment. I give the book 5 stars because anyone working with infants in water will be challenged and astonished by what he has done. you must read it even if you are aghast at what he was trying to prove. Or you may come away wondering what he was trying to prove and why he went so far out on the edge!
